Are you desperate for Jesus? Are you pursuing Him with a reckless abandon, to the exclusion of all other pursuits? If not, why not? What is it in your life that is more important than Christ? These are sobering questions we must all ask ourselves every day. The truth is most of us probably do not spend our days desperate for Jesus.
We claim to love Him, say we devote our lives to Him, but how are those things playing out in your life? If you’re anything like me, there is scant evidence you are desperate for Jesus. We’re desperate for success. We’re desperate for comfort and security. We may even be desperate in our pursuit of a mate. But desperate for Jesus? I don’t think so.
If we’re not living with wholehearted desperation for Jesus, we’re saying there are things in life worth pursuing more than Him. While admitting such a truth is difficult and should be horrifying, it is what the evidence reveals. If not Jesus, then what? Seriously, what is more important in your life than Christ? With whom would you rather be spending time? Who or what is worthier of your attention? It’s crazy how we’ve relegated the Creator of the Universe to the background while we’ve promoted His creation to be foremost in our minds.
We’ve been getting this wrong for so long, we don’t even recognize how backward and upside-down our thinking really is. I doubt any of us would willingly and intentionally declare things of this world to be more valuable than Jesus. All those things we’re pursuing are going to go away. They are all temporary. None will ultimately satisfy; none will ultimately save. Still, every day we set about in pursuit of the inferior while ignoring the superior. I don’t get it. It makes no sense. Yet I must admit my days are often spent in pursuit of things other than Christ and His Kingdom.
I want to live desperate for Jesus. I want Him to so consume me that I can think of nothing else. When I wake in the morning, I want to obsessively seek Him. When we are desperate for someone or something, we let nothing stand in our way of obtaining it. We should live our lives in an unstoppable pursuit and with an insatiable desire for the Savior of our souls.
Are you desperate for Jesus? When was the last time you lived as if it were true? What are the things in your life you are holding dearer than Christ? Why are they there and when will you rid yourself of them? God will not play second fiddle to anyone or anything. He made it clear we are either for Him or against Him. This is an all or nothing game. We will side with Jesus and be saved or with anyone or anything else and be lost forever. What are we waiting for? We are dangerously playing with fire and we will get burnt in the worst manner imaginable. It’s time we all got desperate for Jesus and lived our lives as if it were true.
