Wherever you go, take Jesus with you. He’s right beside you anyway, but sometimes (most times?) we forget He is there. Our conversations are light, superficial, and inconsequential. We talk about the weather, sports, fashion, entertainment, and politics. If we recognized Jesus as being present in that place, would those be the topics of our conversations? I can’t imagine sitting down to a meal with Jesus and just shooting the breeze.
To be in the presence of holiness should do something to us. (Isaiah 6:1-5; Luke 5:8) It should change the topic of what we discuss and upend all our pursuits. Understanding that Jesus is with us in every moment of our lives should change the way we live. (Matthew 28:19-20; Colossians 3:17) If it doesn’t, then we have no clue about who Jesus is. (Luke 6:46; 1 John 2:3-6)
Our God is awesome. (Deuteronomy 10:17; Psalm 47:2) I try never to use that adjective unless describing God. It’s an overused word that, in truth, only describes our Savior and King. That He would take notice of one such as me is a mystery I will never understand. It’s a gift I will forever cherish. The Creator of the Universe and everything in it chose you and me to spend eternity with Him. (Ephesians 1:4-6; John 17:24) That’s beyond all comprehension and logic. Why wouldn’t you want to take Jesus with you everywhere you go? We know He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24), so why are we so intent on ditching Him at every opportunity?
We are God’s ambassadors, commanded to be salt and light in this world. (2 Corinthians 5:20; Matthew 5:13-16) We can’t shine the light of Jesus into the darkness if we are happy stumbling along with the crowd. None of us can enrich the world with the goodness of Christ if we’re content to talk about the same inane things as everyone else. Our calling is to be different, not the same as everyone else. (Romans 12:2; 1 Peter 1:14-16) Would your life look any different if Jesus were present with you in physical form? If it would, then understand He is with you at every moment and live as if you know that to be true.
It’s remarkable how important we esteem ourselves to be when we are no more than insignificant specks of dust without the shed blood and power of Jesus. (Psalm 103:14; John 15:5) In Christ, we are co-heirs to the Kingdom, priests, and future kings. (Romans 8:16-17; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 22:5) Our lives in this world will never amount to anything except for what we do for the Lord. (1 Corinthians 3:12-15; Colossians 3:23-24) Trying to build any sort of earthbound kingdom or sense of importance is delusional. (Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 12:16-21) Only what we do with Jesus will survive this life. (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Take Jesus with you wherever you go. Take Him to the grocery store and share a smile, some kindness, and the gospel with those you meet. Be different. And please take Jesus with you to church. I think I might explode if I have to hear one more conversation about last night’s game when we should, of all places, be focusing on worshipping our beautiful God. You are set apart. (2 Timothy 2:21) Act like it. Talk like it. This world is not our home, so please stop being so comfortable in it. (Philippians 3:19-20; 1 Peter 2:11; Hebrews 13:14)
