Of what are you seeking more? It seems as if we spend much of our lives in pursuit of more. We want more money, more fun, more security, more comfort, more peace, more power, and more freedom. Whatever we have seems to never be enough. The trouble with more is when we acquire it, we realize we still need more. More is never satisfied. It becomes an insatiable hunger and an endless pursuit in our lives. We find ourselves beginning to think the only thing better than more is, well, more!
As I was praying recently, I asked God to make me content in and with His provision for me. I asked to not desire more than what He had entrusted to me. The only thing I want more of is Him. If I am to spend my life seeking more, then I want to spend it seeking more of Jesus.
I began to examine the things in my life where I was seeking more. I am guilty of seeking more money. I want to feel financially secure, so my family is well taken care of and we don’t have to wonder how we’re going to cover next month’s bills. I want to have enough so I can devote my time fully to the work of writing, instructing, and encouraging for the sake of God’s Kingdom. I want more freedom to spend my time employing the gifts God has given me in service to His Kingdom and to others. It seems like a noble goal, right? But the time I spend pursuing more financial freedom, I am not spending seeking more of Him. Any time spent pursuing one thing means another is being neglected. Every time we say ‘yes’ to something, we are at the same time saying ‘no’ to something else. Each of us has only so much time and energy. We must choose wisely where we are spending both.
There is nothing I want more of than Jesus. My reality isn’t lining up with my desires. I want to live my life wholly devoted to Christ, but the truth is I squander most of my time seeking more of things other than Jesus. It’s revolting. It makes me feel ill. Oh, for the faith to abandon everything and seek only more of Jesus. In the end, the only thing which will count for anything is how much we devoted our lives to Him. No amount of more of anything on earth will ever last. Only Jesus.
Of what are you seeking more? What or who is it that constantly drives you to seek more of it? We are wasting so much time in pursuit of things other than Christ. All we need is more of Him. When you are seeking more of Jesus, I promise you everything else will fall into place. We may not get everything we ever dreamed of or imagined here on earth, but we will get Jesus. There is tremendous peace and comfort in that because He is all that matters. Nothing lasts beyond life except what we have done for Him. Only our devotion and commitment to His commands will outlive our bodies. Everything else passes away. All the “more” we’ve spent a lifetime pursuing will count for nothing. Ah, but seeking more of Jesus will pay eternal dividends. Only He is worth seeking more of; everything else will pass away. Of whom or what are you seeking more?
