Pledging Allegiance

June 29, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

There was a time when I was a news and politics junkie. I spent hours devouring articles and newscasts, not to mention the countless time I spent engaged in passionate debate with those who had opinions different from my own. As I’ve drawn closer to Christ and have come to better understand His mission and the role I have in it, I have left those old pursuits in the past.

A pivotal verse for me was 2 Timothy 2:3-4 which states Christians should not entangle themselves in the affairs of this world. The only nation we belong to is the nation of God. We are His people regardless of what piece of land we might find ourselves temporarily occupying.

Worship Beyond Sunday

June 25, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve been reading a series of sermons by A.W. Tozer in which he has been hammering away at the point that worship is not just for Sundays. I believe we all know this and it isn’t new information. I also believe it is information few of us have taken the time to process.

Tozer went so far as to say “If you do not worship God seven days a week, you do not worship Him on one day a week. There is no such thing known in heaven as Sunday worship unless it is accompanied by Monday worship and Tuesday worship and so on.”

Time to Breathe

June 22, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies. We want to draw closer to God, to experience more of His love and character, but we rarely slow down enough to actually take in His glory. We spend our days jumping from one task to the next, and that busyness spills over into our spiritual lives. When we finally get around to praying, studying, and concentrating on God, our minds are so hurried we cruise right through what He is revealing to us.

He gives us an epiphany for service and we quickly file it away so we can get to the next verse or the next name on our prayer list.  And we wonder why our spiritual life isn’t more vibrant!

Love and Free Will

June 18, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Having been created with free will, we are free to choose, free to love, and free to serve. It was for these things we were created in the very image of God Himself. Free will has a dark side as well. Since we are free to choose we are also free to hate, to be selfish, and to reject the God who gave us life. We can – and usually do – pursue whatever we desire.

There is no master blueprint for your life; that would violate the very notion of free will. God created you with everything you would need to live the incredible life He envisioned for you. It is us – you and me – who make the choices that send our lives off the rails.

Urgency

June 15, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

It’s not common for people in decent health to think of death. Most of us feel invincible. We’re aware we’ll die someday, but it always seems as if that is a long way away. People who are focused on death generally are thought to have some sort of mental or emotional problem. The real problem is as long as we remain oblivious to the frailty of our life, we will be less apt to make every moment count.

Assuming death is years or even decades away tends to make us less focused on doing what matters most in life right now. That leads to a life diametrically opposed to the one Jesus instructed us to live.
