Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Satan and the Resistance

April 7, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

In his book, “The War of Art”, Steven Pressfield talks about the resistance we face when we endeavor to become the person we were created to be. While Pressfield is most concerned with living out our artistic or entrepreneurial passions, I believe the same principles apply in our quest to utilize the unique combination of skills and passions God has instilled in each of us in order to complete the Kingdom work He created us to do (Ephesians 2:10).

Resistance is defined in “The War of Art” as anything keeping us from starting or achieving the work necessary to reach our goals. While Mr. Pressfield refers to “The Resistance” as an unknown, somewhat mystical – yet very real – entity, I propose this “Resistance” is actually Satan.

Satan wants nothing more than to keep us from the life God intended for us. He throws constant distractions into our path which cause us to rationalize and procrastinate. We convince ourselves now is not a good time. We think we need to clean up our lives before God can use us. We are sure we don’t have the background, education, training, or {insert your excuse here} to do anything to advance the Kingdom. Worse still, we are too afraid to dare to live in faith God will provide whatever we need to accomplish His purpose and plans.

When we are focused on God, we know no fear. God is love, and love of the all-consuming variety, There is no fear in love (1 John 4:18), for fear is the antithesis of love. When we give in to fear, we hand the victory to Satan, Never mind the fact God has already won the battle for us (1 John 4:4); we inexplicably surrender a fight already won for us by Jesus. That’s the amazing thing about living for Christ. God has prepared us in advance to handle anything that comes our way. The only caveat is we must keep our eyes on Him. It’s why it is so important we make Jesus the object of our affection. If we truly love Him, our gaze will not stray from His beauty.

Whatever is good, whatever is pure, whatever is trustworthy… these are all from God (Philippians 4:8). Anything that contributes to the Kingdom and glorifies God is of Jesus. Anything that tears down, causes fear or destruction, and generally degrades anyone or anything – these are the work of Satan. When the “resistance” tells you you’re not qualified or good enough, that is Satan, not God. The Father, like all good fathers, wants you to fulfill every last ounce of potential you’ve got.

Let’s call the “resistance” what it is; it is Satan. It prevents you from living the life God intended you to live. Jesus leads you on a path of victory, honor, and significance. He will not give you more than you can handle if you simply place all your trust in Him (2 Corinthians 1:8-10). He knew you before you were born; He knows exactly of what you are capable. Whatever you set out to do for His sake, do it. Don’t delay. Don’t give in to fear. The “resistance” you feel is proof you are on the right path. Satan wants to stand in your way. God has equipped you to move ahead.  Push through Satan and the resistance. Jesus is with you and you have nothing to fear.
