Our lives and attention are fractured by the myriad distractions in our world. Every new technology seems designed to further demand our attention through relentless buzzes, beeps, and flashes. Society moves at an ever-quickening pace inflicting an ever-growing list of demands upon our lives. Between our jobs, families, friends, and careers, it can be hard to maintain focus on anything at all.
We become overwhelmed and exhausted and end up medicating with drinks, pills, substances, and mind-numbing entertainment. We seek peace in whatever it takes to distract us from all the distractions! There is a better way. There is an answer to the relentless assault on our senses. We need to re-train our minds to be laser-focused. We need to stop the insanity and pursue the only One worth pursuing.
The object of our laser-focus must be Jesus. If we are focused on anything else, we will not only fail, we will soon find ourselves being pulled back into our hectic and unsustainable lifestyle. I know this because nothing but Jesus will satisfy or bring fulfillment. Unless and until He is our focus, we will constantly be seeking to heal the emptiness we feel inside. Without Jesus, we will always be searching for what is missing. When our lives are laser-focused on Christ, everything else begins to fall into place. He Himself said His burden was easy and light (Matthew 11:30). That’s quite a contrast from what life feels like for most of us.
Of course, becoming laser-focused on Jesus doesn’t mean all our problems will go away. Jesus told us we would have trouble in this world (John 16:33). He came to deliver us from this and to show us a better way. It was His mission and one on which He stayed laser-focused. Thus, when we stay focused on Jesus, we will at the same time be focused on His mission. We will see everything in light of His purpose on earth. Instead of pursuing our own dreams and goals, we will pursue what is important to Jesus. When we are focused on Jesus and His mission, He will help us focus on our part within His mission. Each of us has a part to play and we will not play it well unless we are laser-focused on Christ.
We have allowed too many distractions into our lives and they are crowding out the only One who matters. Jesus is everything and there is nothing worthwhile in life without Him. I believe it’s time we took a hard look at our lives and admitted we have become addicted to the distractions of this world. We need to get rid of all that is keeping us from being laser-focused on Jesus. Our attention needs to be on Him and Him alone. We need to be continuing the mission He began. Pray Jesus will keep you laser-focused on Himself, His mission, and on the role He has for you to play in that mission. Enough of giving in to the distractions of this world. It’s time we got laser-focused on Jesus and began to live the life He created us to live.
