Did you ever wake up and realize you’ve been coasting through life? Suddenly, you recognize while you’ve been living, life has been passing you by. As followers of Christ, we should live soberly and with intention. Our time is limited, and when it runs out, those who have not chosen to surrender their lives to Jesus will be out of options. Their destiny will be eternal separation from God. They will spend eternity in Hell with the devil and his demons.
We have the truth and a responsibility to share that truth. It has never been more important to break out of the malaise in which we’ve been living because time is shorter today than it was yesterday. If we don’t begin living with urgency, I promise we will one day face a horrific surprise as we discover we are out of time.
I live in America and am grateful I grew up in a land of freedom and opportunity. I don’t take lightly the fact I could have been born anywhere in the world, or the blessing of being be born here. Along with the freedoms afforded to me by my citizenship, there comes a constant pressure to conform to societal norms. The USA is famous for promoting the idea of the American dream which says we can be whoever we want to be and acquire every ounce of wealth, freedom, and success we want. Despite their allure, none of these things are worth chasing. They are nice to have, but none will secure your eternity or draw you closer to God. Yet every day, these themes parade before us as marketers do their best to convince us they are what we need for happiness.
If we aren’t careful and intentional in the way we live and in determining who we will live for, we will find ourselves swept along by the currents of this world. The apostle John warns us if we love the things of this world, then we lack love for Jesus in our hearts (I John 2:15-17). We will choose to spend our lives chasing the things the world tells us we need, or in pursuit of One who is everything we need.
We need to recognize how short our time is. If we aren’t intentional in living for Christ, we will fall into Satan’s plan instead. There are no other options. There is no neutral ground, no gray areas in which to immerse ourselves. We choose each day to live with urgency for Jesus or succumb to the easy, popular, wide, and default path of the devil. We’ve been sleepwalking far too long. Today we must decide if we will wake up and live for Christ or leave Him to the side.
