When was the last time you were amazed by God? If it’s been more than a day, you probably aren’t paying attention. I think we’re all guilty of this. It’s as if we become so accustomed to God’s grace and mercy, we take it for granted. It then takes something dramatic to jar us out of our trance and remind us again of how amazing our God is.
We should never go through a day without pausing and worshiping God for His goodness and provision. Taking God for granted is a dangerous position for us to find ourselves. It shows a bit of pride, as if we could handle this life on our own. I trust we all know better.
It shouldn’t take a miracle of healing or blessing for us to be amazed by God. Every breath we breathe is reason enough to be overwhelmed. Who are we to be counted worthy of life? Not one of us has lived a sinless life and is therefore worthy only of the wrath of God and an eternity separated from His love and holiness (Romans 3:23). The fact He sacrificed His Son to die in our place is amazing, overwhelming, unbelievable, and pretty much every other adjective you could imagine. When was the last time you dwelled on the fact you’d be dead if not for the mercy of God?
Most of us depend on someone else to provide the money we need to survive. Whether you are an employee dependent on the company to pay you or own your own business and depend on customers to buy your products or services, most of us are at the mercy of someone else to put food on our tables and a roof over our heads. Almost everyone I know, and it has certainly been true in my life, has had times when we’ve gotten an unexpected job, promotion, or raise. Those are times we remember to thank God. But how often are we amazed by His provision on a day-to-day basis? Employers could fire you on a whim and customers can abandon you. God does neither. He just promises to provide everything we need (Matthew 6:31-33). That’s amazing.
I would venture to say most of those reading this post have some food to eat, shelter to keep them warm and dry, and clothes for their bodies. That’s enough, isn’t it? Somehow, some way, God provides our most basic needs. Many of us have a little, or even a lot, more than just the basics. Who are we to deserve any of that?
Be amazed by God. He loves you and provides for you. The Lord cares enough to notice your most basic needs and most trivial desires. He is intimately aware of everything in your life. Sin and the evil one both interfere with God’s perfect plan for us. He desires our good, and Satan seeks to destroy everything we have (1 Peter 5:8). Somehow through this cosmic battle, we survive. How is that possible? It is only by the grace of God. Every breath, every step, every blessing is evidence of the wonder and goodness of our King. Be amazed by God. Be overwhelmed. Above all, be thankful. God is good all the time, and He is constantly working on your behalf. Isn’t that amazing?
