Do you ever have those moments when it occurs to you how much of an idiot you are? I’m hoping there are some nodding heads out there and I’m not alone in feeling this way. There are those moments of clarity when I’m reminded of who God is, how glorious and majestic He is, and how small I am. I understand God created us in His image (Genesis 1:27), so this is not about diminishing who we are in the eyes of our Maker.
What I mean is we don’t spend enough time contemplating the sheer awesomeness of the God we serve (Psalm 145:3). If the point of our lives is not to know, glorify, and to be known by our Heavenly Father, then there is no point to any of this (John 17:3). Our God is awesome, beyond all words or comprehension (Isaiah 40:28).
If you spent some of your formative years in the 1980s, you know the word “awesome” was the adjective of choice. You also know most of what people described as awesome fell far short of the word’s true meaning. Those things might have been cool, but every day, trivial occurrences are not awesome. They are just pleasant and appreciated. Many years ago, I made the conscious choice to all but eradicate the word awesome from my vocabulary, unless used in reference to God. I slip now and then, but He alone is worthy of the word (Revelation 4:11; Deuteronomy 10:17). Our God is awesome and there is no one like Him (Exodus 15:11).
Think of the things that frustrate or discourage you. They are almost all trivial in the grand scheme of things and almost certain to be devoid of any eternal value. What is worthy of your attention more than the all-powerful, all-holy, all-gracious King of the Universe (Jeremiah 10:6-7)? Who or what is more glorious than He is (Isaiah 6:3)? Every desirable thing on earth is a pale shadow of God’s inconceivable beauty. There are not enough adjectives to describe our Lord. Still, we spend our days thinking of almost anything but Him. That’s how we know we are being the dumbest people ever created.
It’s cliché and perhaps an overused analogy, but if you can remember the first time you fell in love, then you remember how you could focus on nothing else except that person. You were so enamored that not being with them made you feel sick. Why don’t we feel that way about God every second of our lives? How much more wonderful is He than any of His created beings (Psalm 8:3-5)?
Our God is awesome and worthy of our every thought at every moment (Colossians 3:2; Psalm 113:3). Remember that the next time your spouse, boss, or friend offends you or you don’t get your way. This world and everything in it is passing away (1 John 2:16-17). A day is coming when no one will remember you, no matter how great you are (Ecclesiastes 1:11; Ecclesiastes 2:16). Sooner still, you will realize the earthly things and ideas you fought for with such passion are meaningless (Ecclesiastes 2:11).
Why waste your limited time and energy on anything other than our glorious and wonderful Savior? Satan loves nothing more than for you to get caught up in the things of this world (Mark 4:18-19; 2 Timothy 2:4). Don’t give the devil such an easy victory. Our God is awesome, so why not spend the rest of your life seeking first His Kingdom and His glory (Matthew 6:33)? There is no one or nothing else worthy of our attention or our lives.
