Trading TV for God

April 2, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Francis Chan once posed an interesting challenge to his family: limit your television watching time to the same number of hours you spend studying God’s Word. As with any household, especially those that have children, the challenge was not very popular at first but everyone was soon on board. When I read this, I had a couple of thoughts. One, what a brilliant idea and something I immediately knew I was going to put into practice in my own life.

Second, I was deeply saddened that there would be any resistance to the challenge, knowing full well that I would have reacted the same way had my father suggested this when I was growing up. Worse, I know deep down that the challenge still feels daunting. Why is it we are so much more willing to spend our time on things of this world than with the God who created everything in the first place?

Heavenly Minded

March 30, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

When I was growing up, you’d often hear people refer to someone else as being “so heavenly minded that they were no earthly good”. The crazy thing is that this was meant as an insult, not a compliment. Yes, there are actually Christians who think that if you become too focused on Heaven that you will actually be useless on earth.

The way I read the Bible, the exact opposite is true.  As we become more intimately acquainted with the Spirit of God, His power explodes through us and we are able to accomplish far more than we ever imagined. And yes, we do that right here on earth because we are so Heavenly minded.

What Does God Ask of You?

François Fenelon wrote, “What does God ask of you, but to be happy? Have you not realized that we are happy in loving him? Have you not felt there is no other real happiness, whatever excitement might be found in sensual pleasures, apart from Him? Since you know where to find the Fountain of Life, and have once drunk of it, why would you seek foul, earthly cisterns?” It’s a great question. Once we have experienced the incredible love and goodness of God, why would we ever then be satisfied with the pale pleasures of this world that cannot compare in any way to the majesty and unparalleled beauty of Jesus?

Who We Will Become

In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, we are instructed to take every thought captive. In other words, we have to be careful which thoughts we allow into our minds. A.W. Tozer said, “If we are honest with ourselves we can discover not only what we are but what we are going to become. We’ll soon be the sum of our voluntary thoughts.” We become that about which we think. If we want to live a life that looks like Christ, then we must become intentional about which thoughts we allow to take hold in our head. Jesus thought only of pleasing His Father and completing the mission He was sent to accomplish. That’s all He thought about, and it resulted in the only perfect life that has ever been lived.

Living What You Believe

Francis Chan’s latest book, “You and Me Forever”, will certainly challenge the way you think about your marriage, but perhaps even more importantly it will challenge the way you live your life. Every page seems to hold a new challenge for me. For example, Chan says, “While many of us would say we believe what [the Apostle] Paul believed, our lives do not reflect it. If we believe that billions are dying and headed for God’s judgment, does it make sense to center our lives around anything other than the mission to reach them?… Does the way you are living make sense in the light of the existence of hell? Does your use of time and money make sense in light of the suffering in the world today?” What if we really asked those questions of ourselves?
