Nothing to Fear

An old song has been stuck in my head over the last day, causing great conviction and peace all at once.  I often find myself in the throes of these dichotic emotions, so I’m quite comfortable living in such unusual tensions! The song that has been niggling in my brain is “Reckless Faith”, by Rick Cua. While the entire lyric is great, the piece that has lodged itself in my mind is “While others play it safe/ Give me reckless faith”.  I love that. What if we all had a healthy dose of reckless faith? What if we were totally unafraid and refused to play it safe?

Comfortable Faith

I recently heard Ken Davis make the statement that, “There is no such thing as a comfortable faith.” How many of us believe that, or at least live as if it were true? It reminds me of a question A.W. Tozer asked years ago, “Have the saints of God joined the mad scramble for security?” Modern day Christianity looks awfully comfortable, and it seems few are willing to run towards the battle. We want the benefits of Heaven without having to go through Hell to get them. This may resonate with our modern ears, but it’s not the life Jesus modeled for His disciples.

Life’s Three Alternatives

November 7, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

C.S. Lewis,misery,miserable,god's will,narrow path,discipleship,how then shall we live

C.S. Lewis once said that we have three alternatives in life: we can be God, we can be like God, or we can be miserable. As brilliant as Lewis was, it is obvious that in reality we have only two alternatives. We can choose to be like God or we can be miserable. The option to be God, as I know Lewis was fully aware, is not a real option.  We know anyone claiming to be God is either a liar or a lunatic. Only one man in all of History could make this claim and have it be true. So unless you can raise yourself from the dead, you are left with the alternatives of living a life that imitates God as best you can, or living a life of misery.

Self-Denial

October 24, 2013 by Tim Sherfy

As has been posited by many (perhaps most notably by Donald Kraybill and Greg Boyd), the Kingdom of God is an upside down kingdom. If you want to be first, you must be last. If you want to be rich, you must give it all away. And if you want to find self-fulfillment, you must practice self-denial. It seems quite backwards to us because we have become accustomed to thinking in terms of our own culture instead of the ways of God’s Kingdom. But if we will truly embrace these principles, we will find peace and fulfillment unlike anything we have ever known.

The Way of the Disciple

Not many look at each moment of their life as an opportunity to serve God. Time passes so quickly and we lead such frenzied lives that we scarcely notice the opportunities we miss and the decisions we make by rote. It is for this reason that we do not experience great growth in our spiritual lives. Until we learn to capture each moment we encounter, we will struggle to live our life wholly devoted to Christ. A life that is wholly His recognizes every decision is an opportunity to say yes to God and no to our selfish desires. Every breath we take, every thought we think, is a new opportunity to die to ourselves and find ourselves alive in Christ.
