Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Mediocrity

August 30, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

life plan,mediocrity,settling for less,be your best,your best life,determination

“Mediocrity is the signature of chronic inconsistency” writes Jim Collins in his latest book, “Great by Choice”. This should serve as a stinging rebuke to most of us as we consider our walk with Jesus. The follow through on our devotion to Him is pathetic, as evidenced by the condition of the world around us. We long to make an impact for Christ, but we sputter and hesitate, stuck in an endless loop of starting and stopping. New Year’s resolutions to read our Bible and pray every day are forgotten by February, and we disengage our commitment to the poor as soon as we hit a rough financial patch. The problem is we lack the disciplined consistency to truly follow Jesus.

Playing With Fire

We hinder our ability to live as fully devoted followers of Christ when we allow sin to linger in our lives. We were created in God’s image, to live holy and obedient lives that will glorify our Creator. Every time we sin we are engaging in behavior that is diametrically opposed to who we are. We are spiritual beings living life in a physical body. The more we feed the physical rather than the spiritual, the less we look like Jesus. Our focus must be on nourishing the soul. This is accomplished only by pursuing those things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and morally excellent (Philippians 4:8). In other words, we feed our souls by pursuing Jesus.

Being Still

August 9, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Almost all of God’s creation stands silent before Him, testifying to His glory simply by being what they were created to be. The grass is content to soften the steps of those who come across it. Trees reach heavenward in unspoken majesty. Flowers erupt in brilliant color, while streams flow gently over rocks to nourish and sustain the life within them. All of this is done in virtual silence. There is no need to rail against their Creator or obnoxiously draw attention to themselves. God’s creation is simply satisfied to be what it is and to testify to a Creator that is magnificent and beyond compare or comprehension. All of creation that is, except for the humans.

Self-Discipline

August 2, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

putting God first,habits

You can’t be a disciple of Christ while maintaining the status quo. When we make the decision to recognize Jesus as Lord of our lives, everything changes. Or at least it should. Simply pretending to be a follower of Jesus is the same as not following at all. If we confess Him with our lips but do not demonstrate Him with our lives, then we are fooling ourselves if we think our eternity is secured. Jesus said that many will come to Him saying, “Lord, Lord”, but He will send them away because He never knew them (Matthew 7:15-23). If we want to avoid such a fate, we must live disciplined lives seeking Christ, while reflecting His love to others.

Culture Wars

July 30, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

not of thsi world, prosperity gospel, christians and technology

It is virtually impossible to be a disciple of Jesus Christ without living a life of self-discipline. Following Jesus means our focus shifts from being self-focused to others-focused. While this sounds noble and good, it is ridiculously difficult to implement. Our culture has so indoctrinated us with the pursuit of things we “need” and “deserve” that it becomes extremely easy to rationalize spending our time and money on things of earth rather than Heaven. Even within the church there are those that preach that following Jesus leads to prosperity and good fortune. This is contrary to what the Bible teaches (2 Timothy 3:12; Luke 9:58); serving God is all about thinking less of ourselves and more of others.
