Hate the World

November 4, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

I hate the world today. It’s about time, I suppose. As long as we are enjoying the things of this world, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to devote ourselves to the Lord. Most people I’ve talked to think the era they grew up in was the best, and it’s all been downhill from there. My father grew up in the ’50s and swears it was the best time in history to grow up.

I grew up in the ’80s, and I’d strongly propose those were the best of times. I can’t imagine anyone growing up in our current environment looking back and saying it was the best time to be alive. That’s very sad, but also very hopeful for the Church and Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

The Long Slow Slide

October 28, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve always aspired to not be an alarmist in my writing. There are plenty of places around the web where you can get that sort of thing. Now I’m wondering if that’s been misguided. Isn’t a large part of the reason our world is in the mess it is because Christians haven’t been alarmist enough? If we had been more diligent in holding fast to the Word of God and adhering to His commands and standards, I doubt we would find ourselves where we do today.

History is an excellent teacher, and looking back over the past 250 years, we see the state in which we find ourselves is not so much because of any sudden or recent developments, but rather the result of a long slow slide.

Misplaced Hope

October 7, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

With the state of the world today, it’s easy to lose hope. But that’s only true if your hope is in the wrong place. If you were looking for hope in the life you thought you’d have, you may be out of luck for a while. But that’s not where we should place our hope. We suffer from a misplaced hope if our hope is not in Jesus. He is our true hope because we know how the story ends.

We know nothing will ever defeat His Church. What we need to do is take a long view of things. What we do today can be helpful for other Christians 200 years from now. It’s not about our lives right now. As people who are always looking forward to the return of Jesus, we should also be always working for the future of His Kingdom, not ours.

Your Last Day

September 30, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

What if you knew today was your last day on earth? It’s a good question to ask ourselves regularly, if not every day. Would your routine be different? What would you change? If you knew by this time tomorrow you would stand face to face with Jesus Christ, would you be proud or ashamed of the last twenty-four hours?

Few enjoy thinking about death. As long as we’re healthy, there’s a tendency to feel invincible. But time runs out for everyone. We all have a limited amount of time at our disposal, and none of us know exactly how limited our share is. So, regardless of whether you wish to think about your death, it is coming. We may as well prepare for it.

Stand Firm

September 27, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

Almost everyone I talk to these days is experiencing some level of anxiety, depression, or hopelessness. It’s as if this is a pandemic all its own. The world is bathed in fear. People fear a virus, their government, diminishing freedoms, or increasing violence. Between fear and depression, I think it’s safe to say a large percentage of our population is desperate for a way out. They need hope.

Meanwhile, we as followers of Jesus hold the answer to all their problems. There has never been a more necessary time to talk about Jesus. There has never been more fallow ground. Our job is to go and plant the seeds of the gospel. People are hungry, and we hold the bread of life.
