Frustrated or Restless?

I’m tired of watching life happen to me.  The best laid plans seem to always go astray.  The many desires I have to accomplish more and more crowd out any peace that should be in my head.  Where is the peace of Christ?  Why this frustration and restlessness?

Have you been there?  Welcome to life in the Western world.  Convenience is at our fingertips, achievement is ours to obtain.  We are free to pursue any and everything this world has to offer.  Stop for a moment and simply ask, “At what cost?”  What have we lost in our hurried, results-oriented culture?  Look around your neighborhood; observe the affluence regardless of income.  What have we become?

As Christians we are called to live differently, we are called to a life of humility and love.  We are called to peace and selflessness.  Does your life reflect these attributes?  I know I have a long way to go when measured against these core principles.  We are supposed to be a peculiar folk, but instead we have learned to blend right in.  We have become Americans (if you’re a U.S. reader, if not fill in your own nationality) at the cost of being Christians.  We have lost our first love, in fact I believe we’re in danger of losing love altogether.

Christianity was never meant to be proper people attending large brick buildings where they are entertained for an hour or two each week before going back into the day to day drudgery of the “real world”.   We are to be a people in community with one another every day, and every day we are to be about serving the needs of those in our cities and our world.  When was the last time we left our church buildings and immediately began planning how we were going to love and care for the sick, homeless, widowed and orphaned?  More likely we start planning the grocery list or what our jobs will require of us over the upcoming week or even worse, what football game we will watch that afternoon.  Christianity as a whole has become hypocritical and pharisaical.  I cringe at the thought of what Christ would say of my life in particular and the body of the Western church as a whole.  We have become complacent, self-centered and blinded to those around us.

So how do we stop reacting to what comes at us in life and instead start dictating what our life will look like?  How do we quell the restlessness in our souls?  We get back to being the church Christ called us to be.  We return to our first love, Christ, by imparting His love to everyone we meet.  It is virtually impossible to find yourself frustrated with life when you are walking in step with Christ, doing the things he has commanded us to do.  Are you frustrated?  Serve Christ by loving others.  Does life keep slamming into you?  Take a break and find someone to love.  Do you want to impact the world?  Look like Jesus and love your neighbor, serve their needs.  Are you sensing a theme?  Life is easy, we’ve made it difficult.  Love Christ, love others.  Nothing else matters.

Are You On Mission?

I’ve been thinking a lot about goals lately, and how to make certain we accomplish all we can for Christ during our time here on earth.  So many things beg for our time and attention that it is all too easy to become distracted and pulled off mission.  Harder still to remain focused if we have never defined our purpose and goals.  I encourage everyone to develop a mission statement as well as some life goals for themselves.

Remembered For Love

How’s your attitude today?  Does the way you carry yourself reflect the love of Christ?  Are you genuinely happy to greet everyone with whom you come into contact?  Our attitude towards others is the single biggest way we can demonstrate love as Christ did.

We tend to put so many other things above the importance of a proper attitude.  We worry about how many books we’ve read, being fully prepared to have all the right answers, dressing appropriately, having the right friends… it goes on and on.  I believe we have a strong tendency to worry so much about executing proper Christianity that we totally lose track of what Christianity actually is meant to be.  To live like Christ is to demonstrate love; to follow Jesus is to be loved.  If you are a frequent reader of this blog, you no doubt have sensed a trend:  I talk about love a lot.  Everything Jesus did was done in love; every day was lived in love.  His attitude was one of unconditional love.  He didn’t care who you were, what you’d done or how you smelled.  He just loved, and loved in a way that we struggle to even begin to fathom.

Jesus didn’t worry about how well he executed His mission.  He wasn’t interested in pomp or proper form.  He led with His attitude and everything else just followed as a result.  When we lead with love, it is awfully difficult to fail.  No matter what I accomplish in this life, when it’s all said and done, I want to be remembered for love.  I want people to remember a kind smile, a willing heart and a gentle reassurance that everything was going to be okay.  I want to lead with love, and I want to end there as well.

How about you?  Are you leading with love?  Does your attitude exude love or something else?  How do you want to be remembered?  As long as we still have breath, it is up to us to write our epitaph.  We alone are in control of our attitude.  We alone are responsible for choosing to love.  Every day spent not loving others is a day wasted.  Who can you love today, tomorrow, right now?  There’s a familiar saying, “Be the change you want to see”.  I would paraphrase that to “Be the love you wish to receive”.  Remember how Christ loves you; remember how faithful and unconditional that love is.  Show that same love to everyone you meet.  Be remembered for love.

Your Last Day

Imagine that an angel appeared to you when you woke this morning.  Imagine he told you that your life would be over at midnight, and then vanished.  What would your response be?  How would you order your day?  There would be no time for any major plans, no time for that fantastic cruise to the Bahamas or to climb Mt. Everest.  With only 18 hours or less to complete your life on earth, what would be your plan?

While everyone’s actions would be different, to be sure, I believe there are many things we would all agree we would not do.  I would not spend time in any trivial conversation, just to pass the time.  I would not spend my last hours sitting and dwelling on my failures and regrets.  I would not be afraid to tell someone that I loved them, or to introduce myself to someone I always found intimidating in any way.  I would not waste a moment bickering with friends or family over inconsequential activities, or fretting about any political speeches or sitting in front of the television.  I would not worry if the house was clean or the car was washed.

What I would want to do would be to spend every possible moment with those I love.  I would want to encourage everyone I met in hopes of leaving some sort of legacy behind.  I would certainly not be afraid to speak my mind, to tell the truth regardless of the circumstance or consequence.  I would spend much of my day in prayer, preparing myself for the next stage in my life.  I would ask God to show me what I needed to accomplish on this day, to show me those I needed to speak to, and those I needed to forgive.

As I look back over my list, I am struck by the fact that the way I would live my last day on earth is the way I should be living every day on earth.  Why are we so afraid to live this way, to live out loud for Christ?  Instead we try and live quietly, under the radar, and ultimately in insignificance.  I don’t want to be quiet; I don’t want to be insignificant; I want to live loudly.  I want to live each day as if I knew it were my last.  Join me in making a joyful noise every day we live.

No Days Off

I’ve been kicking around an idea for the past several weeks, and think I am finally comfortable enough with it that I need to integrate the principle of it into my life. The concept is simple, yet I believe it can have an incredible impact on the effectiveness of our walk. The concept is simply this: we as Christians are not allowed to take any days off. In fact, it goes deeper than that; we’re not even allowed to take a lunch break. Just as I have long espoused that every second of every minute of every hour of every day we make a choice to follow Christ or turn away from Him, I now am convicted that we must be “on” every second of every minute of every hour of every day.

For too long we have bought into the illusion that we deserve to have everything that Western culture has to offer, and oh by the way, we’ll also follow Christ. This isn’t the call I see in Scripture. Jesus demands that we give up everything and follow Him. We speak our belief to others whenever we are seen by them throughout the day. We speak our belief to God when no one else is around. This covers our actions, thoughts and words at all times, not just some of the time. God never ceases to observe us, and as long as there are other people on this planet, neither will they.

We don’t have the luxury of time. When we meet someone, we must demonstrate the love of Christ and the integrity of our faith to them; we may never get another opportunity. When we are alone, we must always use that time to recharge our spirit by communing with God, practicing spiritual disciplines and resting quietly in Christ – not in front of the latest television phenomenon. There are many things in this world that are inherently neutral – sports, hobbies and entertainment to name a few; but time is not neutral, it will either be used for God or it will be used against God. If we use the time God has given us to indulge in things that do not further His kingdom then we are not living true to our commitment to forsake everything for Him.

Nurture relationships, show love to others. Share a kind word and a few dollars with those in need. Perhaps now more than any time in American history we must realize how quickly our window of opportunity is closing. Our nation is changing and we do not know how long we will enjoy the absolute religious freedom we currently do. We must redeem the time – every second of it. We must work harder to live and love as we told Jesus we would. There are no breaks, there is no time off, but there is a great reward for all who persevere.
