Serving God is the highest calling of life. It is a privilege, an honor, and a responsibility above all others. Serving God is rarely something one aspires to from their youth. Rather, it is an endeavor into which one grows. God is always calling out to His creation, beckoning them to fellowship with Him. When we respond, it becomes the highest calling we could ever receive. Nothing else in life could be more intense or deliver in a more profound way.
Our response is often an arbitrary reflex of our free will, but the call itself is an intentional movement of God towards one whom He created. Why the God of the universe would choose to fellowship with one such as myself will be a mystery until the day I can ask Him. For now, I only know it is humbling. It is the highest calling.
What do we do with such a high calling? If we sit and ponder the incredulity of it, we can become paralyzed in awe and wonder. It is also frightening to recognize the Creator God is taking a personal interest in my life. I have nothing to offer Him He does not already possess. I have no special talents He could not source elsewhere. So why me? Why you? The love of God is beyond our understanding. Sometimes we have to accept what is true and trust God’s reasoning instead of our own. Logic dictates His reasoning will be infinitely superior to ours, so it’s not a frightening acquiescence. It’s just being smart.
We must not be content to keep God’s calling in the esoteric and highbrow headspace. He has called each of us for a purpose. While we may see nothing special about ourselves, God does. He looks at our unique combination of skills, talents, and passions and says, “I can partner with them for My glory.” The fact He partners with us rather than just uses us is significant. He is always with us. We face no challenge alone (Deuteronomy 31:6). No matter how afraid, inadequate, or unworthy we may feel, God’s presence negates every one of those objections.
God is with us. He is near. Our lives are intertwined with His Spirit. That is incredible and why His call on our lives is the highest calling. For what else would you want to give your life? What else is worth spending your time? Yet many who have been called fail to recognize the enormity of the call. We don’t take it seriously and cannot deliver on the responsibility such a calling requires.
God’s calling is profound and will have deep implications in your life. If you will take His call seriously, with His help, you will have to re-engineer every aspect of your life. Everything you do will be for His glory. Your life will no longer be your own because everything will belong to Him. But if you will surrender to His calling, your life will be more full and abundant than you could have otherwise imagined (John 10:10). His is the highest calling, and He is waiting for you to respond.
