The omniscience of God is not something we talk a lot about. But this attribute of God is one of His most awesome. The fact He knows everything at all times is beyond our comprehension. We understand the theory of it. God knows everything. Simple enough. But to dwell on what that means is truly breathtaking.
There has never been anything God didn’t know, and there never will be something that He doesn’t already know. There is nothing God will ever learn because He already knows all things. What He knows, He never forgets. Everything that has been, will be, or is now, is all known at this moment to our majestic God. Remember that next time you feel at all impressed with yourself.
Once you get past the awesomeness of thinking about the omniscience of God (can one ever really get past it?), it presents us with some serious implications. David understood this, and he wrote about it in Psalm 139. David wrote that God knew when he sat down and when he got up again. Imagine God being aware of every time you sit down to rest, eat, or work. He knows. At the same moment, He knows when every other one of the seven billion people on this planet sits down or gets up. He knows the movements of every creature that crawls on the ground or swims through the seas. Nothing escapes His knowledge or awareness.
David goes on to say how God knows every word we will say before we even think about speaking it. That’s mindboggling. This should make us contemplate each word. God knows what we want to say and what we will say. Are our words honoring to God? If we knew He was listening (and He is), would we say what we are about o say? The omniscience of God places a great responsibility on us.
He knows where we go and what we do. He knows our every thought. This is why Paul exhorts us to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). We must not let a stray thought take root in our minds. God knows. Knowing He knows, it should terrify us to think about some things we do. We should be ashamed of some places we go. Everywhere we go, God is there. Everything we think, God knows those thoughts. This is sobering stuff.
The omniscience of God should make us fall to our knees. Our God is so amazing. He is at once unable to be comprehended and yet knowable. We could not know Him except for His mercy and grace in allowing our finite minds to grasp but a glimpse of His glory. Even with so much knowledge and power, our God is not too busy to pay attention to our every move, thought, and word. He is infinitely and intimately interested in our lives. The all-knowing God desires you to know Him. He knows you and loves you in spite of yourself. What an awesome God. If you ever doubt how amazing our God is, think about His omniscience. Meditate on His amazing power and love today. Worship Him for all He is. He is worthy of all our praise.
