I want to live having an obsession with Jesus. Every time I have a spare moment, I want to fill it with prayer, studying His Word, memorizing scripture, or telling someone about the love, mercy, and grace of Christ. We all live with an obsession for something, so why not have an obsession with Jesus? Deep down, we all have those activities and desires that are constantly calling to us.
After a long day at work, what is that thing you want to do when you can unplug from your responsibilities and commitments? That thing is probably your obsession, what you would devote your time to if only you could. For most of us, that thing is not Jesus, and for those of us who declare Him Lord, that fact should shame us.
If you were to come into such a large sum of money that you no longer had any financial concerns, how would you spend your time? What if someone took care of every responsibility in your life? What would you spend your time doing? In other words, if time and money were no object, how would you spend your days and live your life? For most of us, the truth of what comes immediately to mind is not Jesus, but some earthly pleasure or distraction. The sad truth is few lives are marked by an obsession with Jesus.
As we watch the world spiral into sin and darkness, why would we desire those same things that are leading to its destruction? The world is going crazy because it has an obsession with sin (John 3:19). When we pursue anything other than Jesus and His mission, we are not living in God’s will. If we are not in His will, we are out of it, which is just a nice way of saying we are living in sin. If we don’t have an obsession with Jesus, then we have an obsession for something that is not Jesus. Christ cannot be Lord of your life unless He is Lord of everything. There is no such thing as a divided lordship. Jesus is Lord of all or not at all.
Do you want to live having an obsession with Jesus? I believe every genuine follower of Christ must answer “yes” to that question. For what else should you live (John 6:66-69)? What else is worthy of the only life you have? If not Jesus, who or what is worthy of your affection? There is no other way to eternal life, no greater love than that of Jesus for His children (John 15:13).
To live obsessed with Jesus, we must prioritize our lives around Him alone. We must fill every nook and cranny with Christ. How much time do we spend watching television? Browsing the internet? Consuming social media? How much time are we spending communing with and learning about our Savior and King? What has our attention will reveal our obsession.
Jesus is coming back, and one way or another, we are all going to meet Him sooner than we are expecting. I want to meet Him knowing I have lived the life He has given to me obsessed with Him and His glory, not having wasted it on the pleasures and lusts of this world (1 John 2:15-16). I want to be known as having an obsession with Jesus. How about you?
