Good Enough Is Never Enough

April 27, 2026 by Tim Sherfy

Because Jesus is in Heaven, we sometimes forget how close He is. What if He were still on earth in His physical form? If He gave you a task to do, how urgent would you be in getting it done? Would you put it off until a more convenient time or jump right on it? What sort of effort would you expend to accomplish it? Would you cut corners and do just enough to call it done?

I think every one of us would do whatever we could to put in our best effort to present Jesus with a result that reflected how much we revere and love Him. Shouldn’t we do the same even though He is not speaking to us in His human flesh? When serving Jesus, good enough is never enough. (Colossians 3:23-24; Ecclesiastes 9:10)

Why Does It Have to Be So Hard?

March 23, 2026 by Tim Sherfy

Why does it have to be so hard to follow Jesus? Do you ever ask yourself that? We want to obey and serve Him, but it always seems to be a battle. Why does the road to Heaven have to be so narrow? (Matthew 7:13–14) A better question might be why God provides a road at all! One sin makes us fall short of God’s requirement to live in eternity with Him. (James 2:10; Romans 3:23)

Every day we prove over and over how unworthy we are to be in His presence. (Isaiah 64:6) The gate isn’t just narrow, it’s impossible to pass through. (Matthew 19:26) Instead of focusing on how difficult it is for us to live for Christ, we should focus on the amazing mercy and grace that allows us to live at all. (Ephesians 2:4–5; Titus 3:5)

Pain and Darkness

December 15, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

One day we are all going to have to answer for the wasted opportunities and squandered blessings in our lives and of our generation. Each of us is aware of the moments we let slip by without seizing them for the glory of God’s Kingdom (Ephesians 5:15–16; Matthew 25:14–30). The memories are so painful we don’t often dwell on them, but we all know they are there in the deepest recesses of our minds.

This reminds me of when Jesus said He would cast all those who reject Him into the outer darkness (Matthew 22:13). That’s a darkness deeper than the blackest night any of us has ever experienced. Imagine combining such darkness with the pain of every regret, sorrow, and evil we have locked away in that deep closet in our minds. That is a small taste of what Hell will be like for all who don’t bow to Jesus as Lord. That pain and darkness will never end.

Spending Money

November 24, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

As I write this, another “Black Friday” is fast approaching. In America, the day after people overindulge in stuffing their stomachs, they overindulge in spending money for the upcoming Christmas season. It’s curious how followers of Christ get swept up in the same madness that the world does. I am not pontificating from on high because I am as guilty as anyone else here.

My goal is always to complete my Christmas shopping on that day. But, as the date was approaching this year, the Lord smacked me in the face with Isaiah 55:2. The verse says, “Why do you spend money on what is not food, and your wages on what does not satisfy?” Ouch. Once again, the Word of God leads me to rethink how I am living life.

Walking in God’s Will, Part 3 – Seeking to Know God’s Will

October 27, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

Today we continue to look for ways to ensure we are walking in God’s will. His will is not an unknowable mystery, and it is vital that we understand the will of God for us to live productive and fruitful lives worthy of our calling (Ephesians 5:15-17; Colossians 1:9-10). If you are jumping in for the first time, please check out “Walking in God’s Will, Part 1” and “Walking in God’s Will, Part 2,” to see the first five questions to ask when seeking to know God’s will.

There is no decision you will encounter in life that God’s Word does not give you the principles to know what you should choose. With that, let’s dive into the next set of questions you can ask to discern God’s will.
