One Life to Live

This life is finite. From the moment we are born, the clock begins ticking down the seconds of our life. No matter what we do or who we become, we will live once, and then we will die. (James 4:14; Psalm 90:10) We have a responsibility to steward the days entrusted to us in a way that is worthy of Christ dying on the cross. He didn’t sacrifice Himself so we could spend our days on trivialities and pleasure.

He died so we might have life to the fullest and most holy extent. (John 10:10; 1 Peter 2:24) How dare we waste it on selfish living, lust, gluttony, and greed? (1 Peter 4:1-3; Ephesians 5:15-18) That’s grotesque. We have one life, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Or perhaps more sobering, we have one life to live, and after this, the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27-28; 2 Corinthians 5:10) How, then, should we live?

Watch For It

Jesus is coming back, and we should all watch for it. For some, this will be a reunion of the most incredible proportions. We will see Him as He is, and it will be glorious (1 John 3:2; Revelation 22:4). For others, it will be horrific. In the blink of an eye, they will have to acknowledge what they’ve always known—Jesus is indeed who He said He is, the Lord and King of everything. (Philippians 2:9-11; Revelation 1:7)

If you don’t know Christ, you are living a lie. You know there is more to the story than what you’ve been sold and choose to believe. Life didn’t explode out of nothingness and then evolve into what we see today. There is a Creator; there is a God, a Savior, and a Judge. (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 43:11; Acts 17:30-31) And each of us must stand before Him and give an account of our lives. (Romans 14:12; 2 Corinthians 5:10)

Why Would You Choose Sin?

When faced with the choice of honoring or dishonoring God, why would you choose sin? After all the Lord has done for you, why would you choose to serve Satan instead of Him? To my shame, I have to ask myself this question far too often. Like Paul, I don’t do the things I want to do, and I do the things I don’t want to do. (Romans 7:15-19) It’s maddening!

How can we love Christ so much and still live our lives as if He were not more important than anyone or anything else? Christ is Lord; of that there is no doubt. (Philippians 2:9-11; Acts 2:36) But if we aren’t living that truth, then we’re living a lie and a life of delusion. (Luke 6:46; James 1:22)

The Mercy of God

How much time do you spend thinking about the mercy of God? If you are like me, not enough! God is holy, and His standard for our lives is holiness. (1 Peter 1:15-16; Leviticus 19:2) Not one of us can measure up to that. Every one of us has sinned and fallen short of the standard. (Romans 3:23) The penalty for such failure is death. (Romans 6:23) Those are God’s rules, and if we don’t like them, then we don’t understand what it means to be holy.

Holiness cannot tolerate sin because if it did, that holiness would be lost. (Habakkuk 1:13; Psalm 5:4-5) As sinful beings, we then have no hope of escaping God’s judgment. (Hebrews 9:27; Romans 2:5-6) No hope, that is, except for the mercy of God. He loves us so much that He made a way to deliver us from His just wrath and punishment. (Romans 5:8-9; Ephesians 2:4-5)

I Need God Now

When facing a crisis, have you ever said, or heard someone say, “I need God now?” It’s true we need God in times of chaos and trouble. It is also true that we need Him every other second of life. Without God, even for the smallest moment, the entire universe would collapse upon itself. (Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:3) There is no part of life that can survive except for the sustaining hand of our Creator. (Acts 17:24-25; Job 34:14-15)

We don’t just need Him when times are tough; we need Him at all times. This is a shift we must all make to mature in our faith. There is not what we do and what God does; He does it all. We are powerless to affect anything in this life without the providence of God’s power and His will.
