Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Good Enough Is Never Enough

April 27, 2026 by Tim Sherfy

Because Jesus is in Heaven, we sometimes forget how close He is. What if He were still on earth in His physical form? If He gave you a task to do, how urgent would you be in getting it done? Would you put it off until a more convenient time or jump right on it? What sort of effort would you expend to accomplish it? Would you cut corners and do just enough to call it done?

I think every one of us would do whatever we could to put in our best effort to present Jesus with a result that reflected how much we revere and love Him. Shouldn’t we do the same even though He is not speaking to us in His human flesh? When serving Jesus, good enough is never enough. (Colossians 3:23-24; Ecclesiastes 9:10)

Drifting

August 15, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I recently heard David Platt say, “no one drifts towards holiness.” I have observed the truthfulness of this statement in my own life. When we aren’t intentional in the way we are living, the tendency is to drift into sin, not holiness. Unless we are vigilant, we will allow ourselves to be distracted and the drifting will begin. Life is rarely static.

We are always moving in some direction. Even when we think we’re standing still, the currents of life are still compelling us in the direction of their own choosing. Unless we are purposefully setting a course, we will soon find ourselves drifting to places we never intended to go.

Time Debt

June 17, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Every day we are accumulating an astronomical amount of debt we can never repay. It’s not financial debt, but rather a time debt. Unlike money, time is a finite resource. While we can always find a way to earn more money, time is either used the moment you receive it, or it is lost forever. The time we lose, or more accurately waste, is building an insurmountable debt. All the things we know we should have done but put off until later end up passing away when we do.

The phone call you need to make, the message you need to send, or the kindness you need to perform, all are either done in the moment or forever banished to our mounting pile of debt. Time waits for no one. It marches on unabated. The time to do what God puts on your heart is now, not later.

Disciplined Intention

June 2, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve written in the past about both intentional living and there being no days off for a disciple of Jesus. What I have come to realize is those two topics are inextricably linked. The way we take no days off from following Jesus is to make certain we live each moment with intention. Jesus was always “on”; He was always God. By the same token, He was always moving with intention in order to further His mission and to see His Kingdom come to fruition on earth.

Even when it meant torture and death, Jesus steeled His gaze and intentionally move toward the horror awaiting Him. He didn’t go on vacation or spend a few days pursuing pleasure before getting on with things. He kept being who He was for the purpose of why He came. We are called to live in the same way.

Living with Intention

April 18, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve written previously about intentional living. Intentional living has become somewhat of a catch phrase, which is unfortunate because there is great value in living with intention. As I’ve endeavored to live intentionally this year, I have often found it difficult to translate the concept into practical application. Recently a light bulb went on for me.

I had previously identified the areas of my life which were important to me. They are, in order, God, my health, spouse, family, friends, my writing, and finally my career. The epiphany I had about living with intention concerned these priorities. Living with intention means everything I do feeds one of these areas in one way or another.
