Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Follow Your Heart?

August 19, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

It disturbs me that an increasing number of messages from pastors these days sound more like teachings from the personal development crowd than they do from the Word of God. We don’t go to church to learn how to be better people here on earth; we go to learn more about God and how to live and love like Him.

Living and loving like Jesus will improve your life spiritually and mentally, but the personal development philosophies are more focused on the physical and financial side of things. The Word of God will prepare you for eternity, but pop psychology will only help you for the moment in time you will spend in this life. Self-help gurus will teach you to follow your heart. The Bible will teach you to follow Jesus.

Orienting Our Lives Around Jesus

August 16, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

Not long ago, I wrote an article on orienting your entire life around Christ. I want to develop that idea further because I’m not there yet and feel Jesus isn’t through working on me in this area. There was a time when people would spend their entire days working their farms, fields, and flocks. Survival was synonymous with life. Leisure time was a luxury rarely found. And yet, when Sunday came around, almost everyone was in church.

Prayers were said around the table and before bed at night. Scripture was read by the fire before turning in. The whole of life was oriented around work and God. It harkens back to the first week of creation, when God worked six days and rested on the seventh to enjoy the work of His hands (Genesis 2:1-3). It’s almost like He knew what He was doing and defining a pattern for the way His people should live. Imagine that.

Tell the Truth

August 12, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

Thomas Sowell, the brilliant economist and thinker, said, “If you want to help others, tell them the truth. If you want to help yourself, tell them what they want to hear.” This has great relevance in our walk as Christ-followers. If we want to help others, we will tell them the truth of Jesus. When someone slanders the Bible, we won’t sit idly by. We will stand and speak the truth.

Of course, this will put a target on our backs in today’s culture. So, if we’re afraid of that and we just want to get along, we’ll stay silent. We might even agree with the crowd because we will be more concerned with helping ourselves rather than others. May this never be true of us.

We Are Sick

August 9, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

Richard Foster once wrote, “Conforming to a sick society is to be sick”. Looking around the Church today, I have to say we are sick. Every day I read of another pastor or church caving to societal pressure. We are conforming to the world instead of conforming to the likeness of God’s Son. We are conforming to the very world the Apostle Paul told us to come out of (Romans 12:2).

Instead of renewing our minds with the truth of God’s Holy Word, we are saturating our hearts in man-made philosophies and opinions so we do not offend or risk persecution. Too many church leaders today are more concerned with the number of people attending their services than they are with the number of people being saved from an eternity apart from God. I can’t think of anything sicker than that.

Be Encouraged

August 5, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

This world will try to break you. Satan is using everything in his power to cripple you and bring you to your knees. But be encouraged! Jesus has overcome the enemy, and the Spirit of the living God resides in you. There is nothing this world or any of the evil in it can do to stop the mission of Jesus from being fulfilled, and you have a vital role to play.

The last command given to us by our Lord was to go and tell everyone about Him (Matthew 28:18-20). At that moment, He commissioned everyone who would believe in Him to be missionaries of His gospel. You don’t have to travel around the world to fulfill this mission. You can be a missionary in your workplace, neighborhood, and even your grocery store.
