Shallow Prayers

May 16, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

Why is it when we have the power of God at our fingertips we confine our prayers to such small boundaries? We pray shallow prayers, content to focus on things immediately in our purview rather than dare to pray extravagant, deep prayers. Sure, there are exceptions, but I have rarely met someone whose prayers are regularly focused on the deep things of God and the ultimate mission of His Son.

The God of the Universe resides within you, waiting for you to recognize the role He has given you to bring His Kingdom to earth. Jesus promised we would do greater things than He did (John 14:12-13), but we’ll never see that promise come to fruition as long as we are praying such safe and shallow prayers.

If We’re Honest

May 9, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

If we’re honest we don’t love like Jesus. Our love is very conditional. There is great need all around us, but whether or not we choose to love the individuals in the depths of that need is based on our upbringing, our societal norms, whether anyone else is watching, or worst of all, how it will make us look in the eyes of others.

Jesus never hesitated to love. He didn’t measure His actions against anything other than God’s will. Christ was love at His very essence, and everything He did flowed out of who He was. If we’re honest, loving like Jesus means we must always be searching for ways to demonstrate His love to others.

Nominal Christians

May 2, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

The world is full of nominal Christians, people who profess Jesus with their lips but ignore Him with their lives.  There is a very good chance both you and I fall into this category. We would never think it of ourselves and probably are denying it even now. But the truth is we are more than likely not living our lives fully devoted to Him.

A.W. Tozer said, “Believing in Him, we will seek to crucify our flesh and put on the new man which is renewed in holiness. That kind of faith in God is all but gone. When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth (Luke 18:8)?

Love God

April 11, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

What does it mean to love God? The question may seem too obvious or simple to people who consider themselves to be Christians. Of course we love God; it’s the entire point of being a Christian, right? While that’s true, I’ve observed many who simply pay lip service to the notion of loving God. What does it mean to love God and what does it look like as we live it out in our day to day lives?

To love God means we have no other desire for our lives than to do His will. We no longer have any desire outside of Him. It can sound a bit over the top or impossible to achieve, but if our lives are truly devoted to Him, this is what it means to love God.

What’s Your Price?

April 4, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

All it took was thirty pieces of silver for Judas to betray Jesus. Adding insult to injury, some scholars claim that was the going price for a slave. According to researchers, those thirty pieces of silver would equate to about half a year’s wages.  A tidy sum to be certain, but nothing that would change your life. Hindsight being 20/20, Judas’ act of betrayal has to rank as the single most stupid and greedy act in all of history.

Half a year’s wages to sell out Jesus? If you are going to go toe to toe with God, wouldn’t you at the very least want to make sure you were set for life? The whole equation of silver to God seems ridiculous; at least until we begin to examine our own lives and see we regularly betray Jesus for far less.
