Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

God’s Will for Your Life

June 20, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I’m not sure why, but we make following Jesus a lot more difficult than it needs to be. I think when we get to Heaven we’re going to see how complicated we made it and how simple it should have been. Like the Pharisees, we have added all sorts of rules, regulations, and obligations onto what Jesus taught. My guess is we do this to avoid doing what He told us to do.

Just as claiming to be a perfectionist is often an excuse for procrastination, I think our busyness in the name of Jesus is an excuse for our lack of selflessness and desire to love others. We try and hide the ugly with something good. But ultimately only God is good, and any attempt to mask Him with anything else will result in something less than He is. It will result in worthless pursuits.

Time Debt

June 17, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Every day we are accumulating an astronomical amount of debt we can never repay. It’s not financial debt, but rather a time debt. Unlike money, time is a finite resource. While we can always find a way to earn more money, time is either used the moment you receive it, or it is lost forever. The time we lose, or more accurately waste, is building an insurmountable debt. All the things we know we should have done but put off until later end up passing away when we do.

The phone call you need to make, the message you need to send, or the kindness you need to perform, all are either done in the moment or forever banished to our mounting pile of debt. Time waits for no one. It marches on unabated. The time to do what God puts on your heart is now, not later.

A New Rebellion

June 13, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Why are we as the body of Christ not more upset at the sin and evil in our lives and in the world? If I were on the outside looking in, I’d swear we were almost comfortable with the way things are. Somehow, we’ve gone from being a people called to be different to becoming people who have fully assimilated and embraced the culture around us.

When I read about the early Church in Acts or the modern Church in places where following Jesus brings intense persecution, I see nothing resembling the American and Western church. Could it be we’ve allowed ourselves to become so comfortable we’ve lost the will to rock the boat and declare sin for what it is?

Psalm 119

June 10, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

When I was younger and reading through the Bible, I used to dread when I came to Psalm 119. It’s the longest chapter in the Bible, and I still remember groaning when it came up for that days reading. I’ve always had a checklist personality, so when something takes a bit longer to cross off my list, I quickly grow impatient. As I’ve grown to love God and His Word more, I have come to appreciate Psalm 119 to the point it is now one of my favorite chapters, and I get excited when I turn to it.

Psalm 119,commitment,discipleship,priorities,Psalms,Psalms 119,Psalm 119:36,material gain,Psalm119:37,give me life,119th Psalm

There is so much packed into this single chapter. Almost every verse holds a complete and self-contained nugget of praise, worship, wisdom, or instruction. I think you could read Psalm 119 every day for the rest of your life and never plumb its depths.

Well Done

June 3, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I want to live a “well done” life. Jesus taught if we spent our lives using the talents and mission He gave to us for Him, when we face Him in Heaven He will say, “Well done good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21). It is to this we should aspire. It is for those words we should spend our lives. I don’t want to live my life for Jesus in a casual or half-hearted way.

well done,commitment,discipleship,mission,steak,John 19:30,it is finished,Matthew 25:21,good and faithful,2 Timothy 4:6-8,finished the race,fought the good fight,Matthew 7:22-23,many will come saying Lord

Along with the teaching of having our lives found to be good and faithful, Jesus also gave the warning many would come to Him and He wouldn’t recognize them (Matthew 7:22-23). Despite their protests and proclamations of what they had done on His behalf, He will turn them away. They are those who did not hold fast to Christ. They wavered in their devotion.
