Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Discipleship

Time to Breathe

June 22, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies. We want to draw closer to God, to experience more of His love and character, but we rarely slow down enough to actually take in His glory. We spend our days jumping from one task to the next, and that busyness spills over into our spiritual lives. When we finally get around to praying, studying, and concentrating on God, our minds are so hurried we cruise right through what He is revealing to us.

He gives us an epiphany for service and we quickly file it away so we can get to the next verse or the next name on our prayer list.  And we wonder why our spiritual life isn’t more vibrant!

More of God and Less of Me

June 1, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve often heard Christians say that they want more of God and less of themselves. It’s a noble but misguided prayer. The goal is not to have more of God and less of us, but rather to have all of God and none of us. This is more than just semantics. For too long we’ve misrepresented what it means to surrender our lives to Jesus.

When you surrender, you give up everything. Yet far more often than not, very little is surrendered to Jesus. We’ll make a few tweaks to our lifestyle, but significant and lasting change is rare. Following Jesus dictates a total surrender of our lives.

We All Make Disciples

May 28, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

The parting command of Jesus, what is often known as “The Great Commission” (Matthew 28:19-20), was to make disciples. Done correctly, we all make disciples who then go on to make other disciples who go out and make more disciples. This is the organic way that the church, and ultimately the message of Jesus, was designed to be spread throughout the world.

If we don’t make disciples who will make other disciples, then the beautiful message of Jesus gets muted and the people who most need to hear the truth might never encounter it. So it’s troubling how so many people pray a prayer to accept Jesus and never do anything beyond that. The truth is we all make disciples every day. The only question is what kind of disciples we are creating.

Faith that is Fully Alive

May 21, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Josh Husmann, pastor at Mercy Road Church in Indianapolis, recently made the point that, “Your faith is most contagious when it is fully alive.” Dormant faith rarely spreads. If we aren’t living in such a way that our faith drives everything we do, we will struggle to be effective witnesses for Jesus.

When we are fully engaged in our faith, our lives take on an irresistible glow, a fire that is visible to all those with whom we come into contact. We all want a faith that is fully alive, but the struggles of our own doubts and insecurities leave our faith simmering just below the surface. It’s time to let it explode. It’s time we unleashed our faith into the world.

Are You a Spectator Christian?

May 7, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

A spectator is someone who attends an event and watches from the sidelines. They don’t actually get involved, but they want to be near it. That’s as far as they want to go in being part of it. So I ask you: are you a spectator Christian? Have you filled yourself up on knowledge about Jesus without ever actually internalizing it?

Of course the knee-jerk reaction of most would be to bristle at the question. Why would anyone ever admit to such a shallow commitment, right? So keep this just between you and God when you answer. Let’s all be honest here. Are you actively engaged in following Jesus or simply a spectator Christian?
