Zeal

Zeal is an interesting word. Scriptures tell us that zeal for God’s house consumed Jesus (Psalm 69:8-9; John 2:17). We see it played out when Jesus tossed the merchants and money changers out of the temple (John 2:13-17). In doing so, I believe Jesus set an example as to how we should react to things that stand in contrast to God’s design. While tolerance is preached today, Jesus demonstrated none of it towards those who were blatantly ignoring and abusing God’s commands. When was the last time you were so consumed by zeal for God that you took action regardless of what people thought and without thinking of any possible ramifications?

Passion

I enjoy listening to music as I drift to sleep each night. Recently I was listening to an older song by Margaret Becker entitled, “This is My Passion”. While I’ve listened to this song hundreds of times over the years, I was particularly struck on that night by the refrain of the chorus where she sings: “This is my passion, holiness, holiness”. The poignancy of the lyric is driven home by Margaret’s earnest vocal. What if we could say with conviction that the passion of our life was holiness? Yet, isn’t this what Jesus calls each of us to in our own lives?

What Drives You?

If we want to be fully devoted followers of Christ, we can have no motivation other than to continue His mission to bring the Kingdom of God to this earth. We can have dreams and goals, we can make plans and have fun, but if our ultimate aim is not to reflect His glory to a dying world, we will continue to miss the mark. Regardless of what you want to do with your life, if its sole purpose is not to obey and reflect God, you will never find peace and fulfillment. The question we all must ask ourselves is, “What are we living for”?

Mission Trip to Africa

On August 2nd, eighteen year old Kelsey Williams left the comforts of home to serve Christ in Africa (Jinja and Fort Portal, Uganda) for two weeks. This is an extraordinary commitment for anyone, let alone a young woman of her age. Kelsey boldly lives out her passion to serve Jesus. Awesome

I grew up in the early 80’s, so the word ‘awesome’ was ingrained in my vocabulary. Every generation seems to have its catch phrases, and this was certainly the way many expressed themselves in those days. Over the past few years, I have been working to systematically eradicate the word from my speech. Those of you who grew up in the 80’s can appreciate how difficult a task this has been! My reasoning stems from the actual definition of the word. I don’t want to get too technical, but to paraphrase Webster, awesome simply means something that inspires awe. To complete the picture, the dictionary defines awe as “an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime”.
