Distracted

September 24, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

We are a distracted people. Perhaps more than any generation before us, we are unable to focus on the moment at hand. This has had devastating effects on our ability to live as a true disciple of Jesus. A recent study showed the average person checks their smartphone 150 times each day. Another study revealed on average, a person spends 13 hours each week on the internet.

Yet one more study discovered the average person watches 34 hours of television each week. Are you kidding me? When do we expect to find time for Jesus? Everywhere we turn, we are facing distraction, and we are willfully giving in to this insidious trick of the devil.

Building the Kingdom

September 17, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I have become convinced we spend our days either building the Kingdom of God or tearing it down. I don’t believe there is anything in between. There is no gray area in Kingdom work. Our lives are being spent either building the Kingdom or destroying it. Maybe that seems a little harsh. It definitely is not a comfortable thought. We’re aware of when we are doing Kingdom work.

It feels good and we know we’re fulfilling our purpose and doing the work we were created to do. Most of us also recognize the time we spend building the Kingdom makes up a very small portion of our lives. If you’ve never given it much thought, reflect on the past week and try to quantify how much time you spent building the Kingdom of God. Warning: this is a depressing exercise.

You Can Have it All

September 3, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Advertising media is constantly telling us we “deserve to have it all”. American culture encourages us to reach for the stars and to pursue success. From an early age many are taught we can be anything we want to be. As we mature, we discover what all those who have gone before us already know. We actually can’t have it all.

There aren’t enough hours in a lifetime to do everything we want to do. There isn’t enough money to bankroll our every whim. Instead we must determine which things are most important to us to pursue and leave the rest littered on the field of unfulfilled promises and shattered dreams.

The Point of it All

July 27, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

The point of it all, everything we do in life, is to glorify God. The word glorify is a word we don’t use a lot in everyday speech, but essentially it means we reflect the love and character of God in our thoughts, words, and actions. Everything we think should reflect the love and character of God. Everything we say should be full of love and truth. Our every action should demonstrate the love and trustworthiness of God.

Nothing else matters. All of the goals and dreams we had had for ourselves died when we committed our lives to Jesus. His dreams become our dreams. His goals become the things for which we work.

Loving Others

July 23, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I was listening to a sermon by a pastor recently and heard him say, “I have no use for your religion when you claim to love a God you can’t see but hate your brothers and sisters who you can see.” It’s why religion disgusted Jesus as well. Religion of any flavor inevitably devolves into saying one thing with our lips but ignoring those same platitudes in our own lives.

Religion defines a set of rules no one can ever keep. We will never be able to effectively share the truth with others as long as we insist they adhere to a set of rules Jesus never laid down.
