I always thought there’d be more. To be perfectly honest, I assumed I would be more. I expected to have accomplished more by now. I imagined I’d be known by more people. More; it’s such a simple yet sinister word. More is insatiable; it can never be satisfied. More is a beggar, regardless of how much I already have. More is a thorn that incessantly pokes at my soul and demands that I be, well, more. Can you relate? Maybe it’s just me. Perhaps I’m the only one who is constantly uncomfortable and always seeking more. But I’ll bet that’s not the case.
It’s a ridiculous dichotomy. I have Jesus. He’s the King and Creator of the universe. God has drawn me to Himself and bestowed all of His goodness, love, truth, and mercy onto me. In Jesus I have access to every resource imaginable. When I am in despair, He is my comfort. When I am weak and low, He is my strength. No matter the need, He is there to fill it. There is literally nothing I lack in Jesus. I have never known peace like what I feel when I am worshiping in His presence. He calms my nerves and stills my anxiety. I have never known love so deep that someone would lay down their life for me; never until I met Jesus.
I’m a fool for desiring more. I proclaim that Christ is everything to me, then turn around and seek to fill any emptiness with things other than Him. Have you ever done that? Have you been lost in devotion one moment, only to have your thoughts drift toward pride and selfishness the next? For what are we searching? We have already found the answer in Jesus. Satan loves to tempt us with more. He desires to have us long for the worthless garbage that exists outside of Christ.
Shiny objects hold lurid temptations that promise to make us happier, healthier, smarter, and more beautiful. But how can we ever be happier than in the presence of God? He created us to worship Him. Our identity is found in Christ alone. True happiness comes when we are living the life He created us to live. Walking lock-step with Jesus brings fulfillment and purpose to our lives. While our bodies may deteriorate here on earth, we will find perfect health in Him when we die. God is the only source of wisdom and truth. Jesus is the radiant King, dressed in splendor yet gentle and kind. What could be more beautiful than that?
We don’t need to learn to simply be content with God. It is our call to discover that contentment is found nowhere but with God. He created us to commune with Him, to work side by side, and to bring glory to Him in all we do. The only thing of which we should desire more of is Jesus Himself. Everything apart from Him is a lie. We don’t need more stuff, more success, more pleasure, or more money. We don’t need a newer car, a bigger house, a brighter stage, or a more visible platform. We just need more of His love and more of His kindness. Everything else is less. Only God is more.
