William Carey once said, “Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God.” This begs the question of my life and yours, “What is it we are expecting from and attempting for, God?” We know God has created us with a purpose in mind (Ephesians 2:10). Because of this, we should not live our lives without expecting to accomplish great things. Anything accomplished for the glory of God is indeed a great thing.
Knowing God created us to do specific work means we should be attempting great things for His glory. We should never be afraid to attempt what God has placed in our hearts. Living our lives in expectation of what God will do and attempting to do great things without fear will truly lead to a life well-lived in the service of His Kingdom.
Expect Great Things
Our expectations should always exceed our imaginations. God is able to do so much more. The apostle Paul wrote, “ [God] is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20). We tend to think in such limited terms, but God is infinite. He is not limited by our dreams or thoughts. He can do immeasurably more than we could ever hope or imagine. Are you expecting Him to do amazing things in your life? Why not? As the source of all good, He desires good for you and works on your behalf to bring good things about in your life. It doesn’t mean we won’t face trials and tragedies but know those are results of a fallen world and not God’s perfect will for you.
God created you for good works in this life which will further His Kingdom. We should wake every day with high expectations for how God might use us today. We should go throughout our days expecting to find opportunities God will put in our paths. It is our job to then seize those opportunities, but I promise you will miss them if you don’t actively expect them to come.
Attempt Great Things
Fear is the great enemy and favorite tool of Satan. The devil will use fear to keep you from attempting great things for God’s Kingdom. He will do anything he can to convince you of why you can’t do what you have in mind, how you are too old or young, under or overqualified, too weak, too sinful, too ordinary to attempt great things for Jesus. All of these are lies born from the father of lies. Remember who you are in Christ. You are co-heirs with Jesus to the very throne of God. All the power of Christ lives in you. You were created with certain work in mind. You were designed for this. Do not fail to attempt to do what God has created you to do. Kick the devil aside and move forward for God’s glory.
Conclusion
What are you expecting God to do in your life? What is it you are attempting for God with your life? These aren’t questions you should simply read quickly and move on, they are questions that have the capability to massively impact the way you live your life. Expect much from God. Attempt much for God. See what He will do through you. You will be amazed and thankful for the work He has given you to accomplish for His Kingdom.
