Jesus is better than anything for which you’d live. No amount of success, money, or fame compares to the richness of knowing Christ. Fame is fleeting, success dies with you, and money always winds up in the hands of someone else. Jesus is everlasting, life with Him is just getting started when we die, and He will never leave us (Deuteronomy 31:6). By every measure, Jesus is better. We spend our lives searching for some place to call home and for some experience to bring us happiness at last.
A house, no matter how splendid, will not necessarily make you feel at home, and happiness is not the same thing as joy. For those who serve Jesus, to be away from here is to be at home with Christ (2 Corinthians 5:6-8). In His arms, we will find true joy, something exponentially better than momentary happiness. And we will find worth and purpose that transcends our circumstances and what anyone else might think or say about us.
Jesus is better than your choices of entertainment. Whatever lights you up will do so for only short periods and then it’s over. Jesus is everlasting. Entertainment is little more than a distraction from the pain and mundanity of life. But the love and enjoyment of Jesus go on forever. The best moments of my life have been times of sitting quietly and being aware of the presence of God. It’s at once mind-blowing, life-altering, comforting, and utterly peaceful. Now, that’s entertainment!
Jesus is better than your addictions. No matter how great they might seem in the moment, every addict knows in their moments of clarity that they are a slave to their addiction. Jesus came to set us free from everything that holds us captive (Luke 4:18-21). Freedom is better than slavery. Jesus is better than addiction.
In another way, Jesus is the best addiction you’ll ever have. You can never get enough of Jesus, and the more time we spend with Him, the more obsessed we become. But unlike most addictions, more of Jesus is actually good for you.
Jesus is better than your best relationship. Whether it’s your spouse or most trusted friend, everyone will let you down. Even worse, you will at some point let down those who love you most. We live in a broken world full of broken people engaging in broken relationships. But Jesus will never let you down. His love is pure in ways we will never be able to comprehend. He is always faithful and sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24; Matthew 28:19-20). He will not lie, cheat, or let us down. And no matter how badly we mess up, He is eager to forgive and does not hold our indiscretions against us (Psalm 103:12).
Jesus is better. He’s better than anything to which you might compare Him. Jesus is more enjoyable to experience than any form of entertainment. He’s healthier than any addiction. Being addicted to Jesus will transform your life in ways you cannot even imagine. And your relationship with Jesus will make every other relationship you’ve ever had seem worthless. Jesus is better than anything, and He is waiting for you to find out why.
