No matter what we do, we are making deposits into an eternal account or throwing away the time given to us. We fill our days with decisions ranging from what to wear, what to eat, what to say, what to think about, or what to do. Every moment carries with it the choice to honor God or worship ourselves. Satan chose to worship himself, and look how that continues to turn out for him.

Despite being the most beautiful of all the angels (Ezekiel 28:12-15), he considered himself greater than his creator. (Isaiah 14:13-14) The tragic results of such pride are eternal separation from God, unending torment, and no hope for the future. (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10) The same fate awaits all who refuse to bow their knee in worship of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Most of us live our lives without giving much thought to the eternal consequences of every idle thought, word, and deed. We spend every second of our lives making deposits that will glorify God or magnify our selfish pursuits and desires. You can’t spend your lives throwing away every gift entrusted to you and expect to be rewarded when you face the Judge of the universe. (2 Corinthians 5:10; Matthew 12:36) If you live your life without intention, you will end it in desperation. What will you say to the Lord when you have nothing to show for your entire life? (Romans 14:12)
Where do you want to invest the gift of life given to you? Our actions dictate which account we are making deposits in, either investing in the future or wasting what we have on the present. Everything we do bears an eternal weight and consequence. We don’t feel it, but it’s true. If you eat a donut today, you won’t notice much change in the way you feel or in the size of your waistline. But if you eat a donut every day for the rest of your life, the compound effects are going to show in myriad health complications and an ever-expanding wardrobe in all the wrong ways. Time turns those tiny deposits into unfathomable accumulations.
Nothing we do, think, or say is inconsequential. (Ecclesiastes 12:14; Luke 8:17) God is always watching, always recording how we choose to spend the one life that in His grace He has given to us. There is no moment that is ours to spend as we wish. Every second of every minute of every hour of every day belongs to God, and it is our duty to spend it in a way that honors and glorifies Him. (1 Corinthians 10:31; Colossians 3:17) Who else is worthy of devoting our time to? Only Jesus is worthy, and yet we squander time as if He doesn’t matter. (Revelation 5:12; Ephesians 5:15-16)
Are you spending your days making deposits into eternity or wasting everything to satisfy your selfish lusts? (Galatians 6:7-8) Are you investing your time or throwing it all away? We need to change the way we approach each day so that we orient everything towards God. (Romans 12:1-2) Nothing we do is worth doing if it isn’t for Him. (Colossians 3:23-24) Living for ourselves is the epitome of pride, and it is to live just like Satan.
Be thoughtful in all you say or do, capturing every thought and being intentional in every action. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) There’s no such thing as a moment to waste because you never know if that is the last one you will ever have. Each moment, then, is a question of where you will spend your time, talent, and energy. Will you invest it in eternity or waste it on this life? You are always making deposits somewhere; the question is, where?
