Everyone seems to use the term “uncertain times” these days. It’s not as if any time has ever been certain. There are always new challenges to face and tough decisions to make. When life seems uncertain, we can take great comfort in knowing our God is never uncertain and always in control. Those aren’t just nice platitudes, but definite truths based on who He is. God is the same today as He has always been and will always be (Hebrews 13:8).
There’s a steadiness to Jesus that brings peace to our hectic and crazy world. While we encounter situations every day where we have no idea what to do, Jesus always knows the perfect response. He has a plan for every contingency of every contingency. We serve a steady God, One who is never overwhelmed.
I have often wondered how people without Christ get through life. He is my closest companion and I spend my days in constant conversation with Him. I can’t imagine anyone or anything being able to fill the gap in my life if He weren’t present. He is my confidence when I am shaken, my wisdom when I am lost, and my peace when I am in despair. Jesus is the reason I do anything. Without Him, my entire life would be without meaning. In the end, it won’t matter what we’ve done, how much money we’ve accumulated, or how popular we’ve become. We all die. If that’s all there is, then life is meaningless. Again, I’m uncertain how someone without Jesus even finds a reason to get up each day.
Followers of Jesus know the end is only a new beginning. Life is not meaningless because we have a mission to accomplish and an eternity with Jesus waiting on the other side. Knowing this gives my life meaning and purpose. It gets me out of bed each morning, even when the day ahead is uncertain and filled with circumstances and trials I’d rather avoid. Knowing Jesus is beside me is all I need to face another day in this life.
If you know Jesus, today is an opportunity to serve and glorify Him. It’s a chance to carry out His mission here on earth. Our God is with us. Evidence of His presence surrounds us if we will but take the time to notice. We need not fear what’s around the bend, because Jesus will still be right there. He never leaves our side (Deuteronomy 31:6), and there is nothing He can’t handle. We can be confident in knowing our struggles are not ours alone to solve, but His to carry us through.
The times may be uncertain. You may be uncertain what to do next. But God is never uncertain. He is here, and He loves you beyond anything you could ever imagine. Of that I am certain. When uncertainty overwhelms you, think of what is certain in life: God’s presence, the love of Jesus, and the unsurpassable worth you have in the eyes of the all-powerful Creator. We can be confident, not afraid. Our Lord is with us, and He will carry us through. And that is for certain.
