Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Who We Will Become

In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, we are instructed to take every thought captive. In other words, we have to be careful which thoughts we allow into our minds. A.W. Tozer said, “If we are honest with ourselves we can discover not only what we are but what we are going to become. We’ll soon be the sum of our voluntary thoughts.” We become that about which we think. If we want to live a life that looks like Christ, then we must become intentional about which thoughts we allow to take hold in our head. Jesus thought only of pleasing His Father and completing the mission He was sent to accomplish. That’s all He thought about, and it resulted in the only perfect life that has ever been lived.

Living What You Believe

Francis Chan’s latest book, “You and Me Forever”, will certainly challenge the way you think about your marriage, but perhaps even more importantly it will challenge the way you live your life. Every page seems to hold a new challenge for me. For example, Chan says, “While many of us would say we believe what [the Apostle] Paul believed, our lives do not reflect it. If we believe that billions are dying and headed for God’s judgment, does it make sense to center our lives around anything other than the mission to reach them?… Does the way you are living make sense in the light of the existence of hell? Does your use of time and money make sense in light of the suffering in the world today?” What if we really asked those questions of ourselves?

Jesus is the Good News

We often get in the way of the simplest message. Instead of just telling people about Jesus, we launch into complex explanations of why Jesus is the good news and what we must do in order to experience Him. In his book, “Flesh”, author Hugh Halter puts it in very understandable terms: “Jesus is the good news that most of us are starving for. It’s just that He has been hijacked by rules and structures and humans afraid of grace.” We’ve made it a difficult thing to understand that Jesus is the good news. His love, His grace, His desire to be with us is all we really need to understand.

The Raging War

It seems few of us live our lives with any recognition of the very real spiritual battle raging all around us. Real angels and real demons clash in ways that affect our physical world in tangible ways, but we carry on oblivious to it. In his book, “You and Me Forever”, Francis Chan says, “He has given us a clear mission – to make disciples. Yet Christian[s]… can most typically be found… skipping through life, ignoring the battle that rages around them. We have made happy families our mission. That is not the mission Jesus gave us.” We are to tell people about the trustworthy character of God, the sacrifice of His Son, and to make them aware of the battle that rages around us all. We are to help them follow in the footsteps of Jesus and strike back at the forces of Satan.

Jesus at the Center

I love this thought from A.W. Tozer: “We should see God at the center, and everything else just at the edges.” Can you imagine being so consumed by God that anything that was not God appeared only in your peripheral vision, and slightly blurry at that? This is the goal of my life and for the life of every true disciple of Jesus. When Christ walked the earth, He did so with His focus firmly and always on the Father. He made it clear that the things He did were only because He saw the Father doing those same works (John 5:19). As people-centric as Jesus is and was, those same people still were only on the edges of His vision. He lived His life so consumed by God that nothing could compromise His mission.
