Seeking More

September 2, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

Of what are you seeking more? It seems as if we spend much of our lives in pursuit of more. We want more money, more fun, more security, more comfort, more peace, more power, and more freedom. Whatever we have seems to never be enough. The trouble with more is when we acquire it, we realize we still need more. More is never satisfied. It becomes an insatiable hunger and an endless pursuit in our lives. We find ourselves beginning to think the only thing better than more is, well, more!

As I was praying recently, I asked God to make me content in and with His provision for me. I asked to not desire more than what He had entrusted to me. The only thing I want more of is Him. If I am to spend my life seeking more, then I want to spend it seeking more of Jesus.

Casual Indifference

August 29, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I think we have the habit of not taking sin seriously enough. We all sin every day, but how much does it truly bother us? I was reading in Ezra and observed his reaction to his own sin. It says in Ezra 9:6, he was so embarrassed and ashamed of his sin he couldn’t even lift his eyes to face God. He recognized his sins and the sins of his people were higher than his head and his guilt was as high as the heavens.

When was the last time you considered your sin like this? We are far too casual in response to our own sin. We know Jesus has paid the price for us, so no matter what we do, we’re covered. Somehow this has led us not into deeper repentance, but into casual indifference.

The Purpose of Life

August 22, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

What did you do yesterday to build the Kingdom? What will you do today? Those two questions may be the most important you can ever ask yourself. Indeed, these questions frame the purpose of life. There is nothing else worth living for other than Jesus. We will spend our lives building His Kingdom or building our own.  The Kingdom of God is eternal.

It will exist long after our own little kingdoms have faded in history, washed away by the tides of time. But Jesus remains. His Kingdom endures forever. Why would we spend our lives pursuing things which will not last when we can spend it for that which lasts forever?

Moving Towards God

August 12, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

I enjoy finding things secular writers write which are applicable to our Christian journey. It proves Jesus can use anyone at any time to speak to us. Seth Godin recently wrote, “It is possible to spend your entire day moving towards something you seek. Alternatively, you can spend your time running away.” This is true in our Christian walk. We can spend each day in determined and intentional pursuit of Christ, or we can fill it with trivial distractions and run away from Him.

We choose how we will spend each minute, every hour, and every day. No one controls our time except for us. We make the decisions. We choose whether we will spend the next moment thinking of God or thinking of ourselves. We choose what we will look at, listen to, and the activity of our hands.

Golden Handcuffs

August 8, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

The story of “The Rich Young Ruler” is one of the best-known parables told by Christ (Luke 18:18-23). For years, scholars and laypeople alike have debated its meaning and application. What are the implications for a 21st-century audience? Should we all sell everything we have, give to the poor, and follow Jesus? Perhaps, but at the risk of executing somewhat of a bait and switch, such will not be the topic of this post. Instead, I want to focus on the lesser discussed conversation Jesus had next with his followers.

In that conversation, Jesus stated it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it was for a rich man to enter Heaven (Luke 18:24-27). In other words, it was virtually impossible. Why did He say this, and what implications does it have for those of us who are incredibly wealthy by historical standards?
