Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Discipleship

An Inconvenient Life

January 25, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

If you want to be a follower of Jesus, you must accept you will live an inconvenient life. It isn’t you might have to live an inconvenient life, it is a certainty you will. We all have particular rhythms and structures built into our lives and we don’t want to see them disturbed. I have observed many believers who live lives of little consequence because they never move outside their comfort zone. Comfort is the rallying cry of this generation of believers and it should make every disciple of Jesus sick to their core.

This is the era of the lukewarm, the ones Jesus proclaimed he would vomit out of His mouth (Revelation 3:16). Following Jesus is never convenient. If you want to stay in your comfortable life with its familiar trappings and surroundings, I submit Jesus is not for you.

Humility and Discipleship

January 11, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

The life of Jesus was marked by humility, yet we who claim to be His followers rarely live with the same goal. We spend most of our days in vain pursuits, determined to climb the ladder, find happiness, avoid suffering, and generally promoting ourselves at every opportunity. While Jesus spent his life relinquishing His own glory, we spend our lives pursuing it.

To be a follower of Jesus, we must spend our lives dedicated to living as He did. Yet somehow we’ve twisted that into some bizarre blend of the American dream. The unspoken truth is the so-called American dream is in direct opposition to the dreams of God for your life.

Perfect Peace

January 7, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

Isaiah 26:3 says “You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You.” Reflecting on this verse, A.W. Tozer wrote, “The only fear I have is to get out of the will of God. Outside of the will of God, there’s nothing I want, and in the will of God there’s nothing I fear.” As long as we are in the will of God, He has promised to keep us and to give us peace.

What else could we possibly want from life? It feels as if that question should be rhetorical, but so many professing Christians seem to answer with things like happiness, safety, and success. These are all temporary affections promoted by an American Christianity, not by Biblical teaching.

Daily Time with God

January 4, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I closed out last year with a two part series titled, “Your Best Year Ever”, which focused on establishing a consistent daily time spent alone with God. I wanted to revisit that topic and address those who already practice the discipline of a daily “quiet time”. I believe no matter how far along in your journey you are, no matter how much your life might already look like Jesus, there is always room for more growth and more learning.

It is not possible to fully understand God in hundreds of lifetimes, much less the single one we all possess. So if you are already regularly spending time in God’s presence, I have a few ideas to help you make that time more effective so you too will have your best year ever.

Your Best Year Ever, Part II

December 31, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

In Part I of “Your Best Year Ever” we discussed how the most important thing you can do in the coming year is to spend consistent time in God’s presence each day. Most have probably heard this advice before, but many struggle in determining what to do during the time they set aside. I want to share a few of my own habits (and new commitments) in hopes they will be helpful for you or at least inspire some new ideas for your own time with God.

Remember the time set aside for Christ should be all about Him. It’s easy to consume the time praying for all your needs and desires, but that means it’s all about you. You are the follower, not the followed. When you become God, it can become all about you. Until then, let’s focus on Jesus.
