Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

What’s Next?

April 23, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Sooner or later, every crisis ends. We will then face the question of, “What’s next?” It’s an important question. While God wants and wills only good for His people, He also uses what the enemy intended for evil to mold us into someone better and stronger. As we emerge from trials, we will be changed. Life will be at once different and familiar.

If we use the time of crisis to draw closer to God, we will be better equipped to handle the next obstacle life puts in our path. But if we cower in fear, embracing our anxiety while we think the world is caving in around us, we will be weaker and poorly equipped to deal with what’s next.

Taking Offense

April 20, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Nothing good ever comes from taking offense. Think back over your life. When you have been offended, did it ever end well? Did taking offense lead to you looking more or less like Jesus? It amazes me how Jesus never took offense when people ridiculed or even blasphemed Him. He just took it in stride. He looked beyond the comment and into the heart of the one making the comment. He loved them.

This is not our response when someone wrongs us. We are quick to defend when we perceive ourselves to be wounded. Our pride causes us to withdraw rather than reach out in love. To be blunt, taking offense makes us look like a spoiled child.

Marching Orders

April 6, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

We live in fascinating times. Watching the panic, surfing the ever-changing waves of information, and dealing with the very real fall-out from the situation at hand can rattle even the most stable. Nothing would be easier than to allow ourselves to get off our mission for God. There’s a rule in the military: until they receive a new order, the last order given stands. And so our marching orders have not changed.

Jesus told us to go into all the world telling others about Him (Matthew 28:19-20). He said to love our neighbor as much as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40). And He said to love and serve Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30-31). These are our marching orders, and the insanity of the times we live in do not overrule them.

Psalm 84

April 2, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

We live in crazy days.  For someone ready to be done with it all and to just be in God’s presence for most of my last twenty years or more, days like these make me realize how much I want to be home with Him. I’m not giving up. I know as long as I’m alive, God has things for me to do. I want to serve Him with everything I have until He brings me into His presence.

Until then, I admit there is a part of me that feels like I am just biding my time, doing what I must do to get by until I get to be with Him. Reading Psalm 84 this morning only reinforced my feelings.

It is Well

March 16, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Growing up as a preacher’s kid, I think I learned every hymn forward, backward, and upside down (except for the third verses, of course, which are inexplicably always skipped!). As I grew older, my taste in music transformed and I left the old hymns in the past. Now and again, someone releases a modern remake of an old hymn, and it provides a sweet sense of nostalgia. Updated music has helped me rediscover a few old songs. There is one, however, that over the past couple of years has resonated with me in its original form.

I love the haunting and solemn melody of “It Is Well with My Soul”. I have an entire playlist of different instrumental versions of the hymn that I often play during my morning prayer time. It stops me in my tracks every time to ponder how, with Jesus, it is well with my soul regardless of what’s swirling around me.
