Destined to Lose

August 25, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I had a disturbing thought recently: We are destined to lose. I’ve read the Bible and I know how this war ends. God wins. We win. But this battle we fight today? We are destined to lose. God’s will for our lives is we continue the mission of Jesus. We are to bring the Kingdom of God down to earth. It is our job to model the love of Jesus and proclaim the incredible truth of God’s character to every person we encounter.

Unfortunately, the Bible makes it clear things will get worse before they get better. We live in dark, evil times. Many think these are the last days. We are not to the first to think this way; most generations before us believed the same for their own lifetime. The fact is, until Jesus returns, we are fighting what at least appears to be a losing battle.

Tools for Building the Kingdom

June 20, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I was listening to a recent message by Andy Stanley (you can listen to the message here) and he introduced the topic of everything we own being a tool for building the Kingdom. Our money, our car, our house, our kitchen table – everything – can, and should, be thought of as tools for building the Kingdom.

I have long understood the time and money we are blessed with should in turn be used for God’s purposes here on earth. But I admit, I had never considered how everything we own should also be seen as tools for building the Kingdom. It’s a bold way of thinking with the possibility of opening new avenues of service to our King.

Prideful

May 26, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

We are prideful people. Each of us, even if we don’t want to admit it. Every sin proves our pride. Every time we sin, we had the choice not to sin. We knew what was God’s way, what was right, but we decided to do what we wanted to do anyway. In effect we are saying we know what is better for us than God does. And in that moment we have made ourselves to be God.

We have exalted our will above His. We’ve all done it, and often every day. It’s how I know we are all prideful people because I know we all sin. Before you get too down on yourself, know there is hope for our predicament. There is a cure for pride.

Crucify Yourself

May 23, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

In his book, “Counter Culture”, David Platt echoes a common theme of this blog. He writes, “In a world where everything revolves around yourself – protect yourself, promote yourself, comfort yourself, and take care of yourself – Jesus says, ‘Crucify yourself. Put aside all self-preservation in order to live for God’s glorification, no matter what that means for you in the culture around you.’”

We are by all measures the wealthiest people to have ever walked the earth. At the same time, I would suggest we are also the most self-centered generation in history.  We care for ourselves first, showing compassion for others with anything left over, if at all. Far from living a crucified life, we are living a conceited life.

Live a Powerful Life

April 25, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

Everyone wants to make a difference. We all want to live a life of significance, to live a powerful life. Why then do so many lead lives of quiet desperation? Should Christ followers even aspire to any form of greatness or recognition? Nelson Mandela said there is no passion in playing small, in living a life less than you are capable of living.

I think Jesus would agree. He created you with a unique blend of skills and passions to do the work He designed for you to do. He created you for a reason. If Jesus is your Lord, the very Spirit of God resides within you. How then could you not live a powerful life?
