Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

There is Nothing New

March 12, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

History is cyclical. There always seems to be a reason for people to panic or worry. Whether it’s the climate, a disease, or tumbling financial markets, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the news of the day. It’s important to keep our perspective when worry creeps into our hearts. The first thing to remember is God has been in control since the beginning, and He will be in control at the end. Nothing His creation does catches God off guard. Our omnipotent Creator always has a contingency plan.

Not only is He in control, but He is also always with us (Deuteronomy 31:6). We face nothing on this earth alone. While the media often declares we are experiencing the worst crisis in history if you’ve lived long enough, you know we’ve seen this all before. As Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived once said, “There is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

Deep Faith

March 5, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Every day my heart breaks as I read of yet another person who was beaten, tortured, or killed because of their faith in Jesus Christ. It is a rare day when a new report does not hit my inbox. Writing in my warm house in my safe neighborhood, my daily experience could not be more different from theirs. I am free to gather with others to worship any time I choose.

I can buy Bibles and Christian materials twenty-four hours a day and have them delivered the next afternoon. The dizzying array of churches and resources available to me almost borders on being overwhelming. And yet the faith of so many in the West remains weak compared to the deep faith of those who have no access to such a bounty of instruction and encouragement.

Live Differently

February 10, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Our lives should set an example every day of how loving Jesus causes us to live differently. In a world filled with hate, division, violence, and outright evil, we should shine as examples of love, peace, humility, and integrity. It makes no sense to be a Christian if we will spend the rest of our lives behaving as the world does.

Jesus didn’t call us to conformity, but to be a people who are set apart and look unique to the world (1 Peter 2:9-10). If you aren’t willing to live differently, then you aren’t ready for Jesus to be Lord of your life. When you surrender everything to Him, everything will change for you.

Diverse and Eclectic

January 30, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Most of us hang around people who look like us, think like us, and share the same beliefs as we do. Being charged with furthering Jesus’s mission to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth, I find it difficult to believe Heaven looks like our homogeneous gatherings. No, I think Heaven is the most diverse and eclectic bunch of people we can imagine. If that’s true, why don’t we strive to surround ourselves with similar gatherings now?

This life is our only chance to prepare for our eternal one. We may as well practice now. Paul encourages us in Romans 15:7 to accept others just as Christ accepted us.  Jesus takes us as we are. We should also accept others as they are without demanding they become like us. God loves them just as they are, and so should we.

The Gift of Salvation

January 20, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

You don’t have to hang out among Christians for very long before hearing about the “free” gift of salvation in Jesus. It is amazing how we owe Jesus nothing in return for His saving us for all eternity and sending His Spirit to live inside us. We marvel at this gift, and with good reason. But, in truth, the gift isn’t free. No gift is. Every gift will cost the giver something. The gift of salvation is no different.

Around Easter, we take the time to ponder what it cost Jesus to save us. But we rarely think about or discuss what this “free” gift of salvation cost God the Father. Can you imagine volunteering your child to die on behalf of a multitude of ungrateful people, most of whom will refuse the gift, anyway? What the gift of Jesus cost God is beyond human comprehension. Perhaps it’s why we choose not to think or talk about it.
