It is Well

March 16, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Growing up as a preacher’s kid, I think I learned every hymn forward, backward, and upside down (except for the third verses, of course, which are inexplicably always skipped!). As I grew older, my taste in music transformed and I left the old hymns in the past. Now and again, someone releases a modern remake of an old hymn, and it provides a sweet sense of nostalgia. Updated music has helped me rediscover a few old songs. There is one, however, that over the past couple of years has resonated with me in its original form.

I love the haunting and solemn melody of “It Is Well with My Soul”. I have an entire playlist of different instrumental versions of the hymn that I often play during my morning prayer time. It stops me in my tracks every time to ponder how, with Jesus, it is well with my soul regardless of what’s swirling around me.

Everyday Miracles

December 30, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

We all ask for miracles in our lives but fail to recognize them when they occur. It’s easier to find a logical explanation than believe God showed up in an amazing way. Fascinating. We pray for a miracle, get one, but can’t bring ourselves to believe it’s true. We’ll credit modern medicine, a lucky break, a friend, or the kindness of a stranger; but God? That seems kind of far-fetched.

everyday miracles, glory, mercy, prayer, miracles,Matthew 6:31-33,don't worry, all these things will be provided for you

My question is if we don’t believe in miracles, why do we ask for them in the first place? We fail to recognize the everyday miracles occurring all around us. Because we aren’t looking for God’s glory and mystery, we don’t see it. So, we have miracles we ask for and God grants, and we have the everyday miracles surrounding us. But we are blind to them all.

A New Creation

December 26, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

When you give your life to Jesus, everything changes. It’s not only your eternal destiny that changes, but your life right now is transformed. God gives you a new identity. Everything you’ve thought about yourself is no longer true. You are no longer what anyone else has labeled you. You are no longer limited by your own beliefs or those of others. When you make Jesus Lord of your life, you become a child of the King.

From that moment on you are not a failure, you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). You are not an aimless wanderer, you are a person of purpose, created with unique gifts and talents to accomplish things for the Kingdom of God only you can do (Ephesians 2:10). Your old limitations and fears no longer apply. You are a new creation in every way (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Go and Tell

December 12, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

This blog is focused on discipleship. It’s my hope the words written here will instruct and encourage you to live your life wholly devoted to Christ and to become the person He created you to be. Much of my own life is spent learning more about Jesus and what it looks like to walk in His footsteps. My passion is to see others embrace and love Him for the holy and magnificent God He is. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t write from time to time on something even more important than devoting your life to Christ.

go and tell,discipleship,love,mercy,mission,sharing Jesus,Matthew 28:18-20,great commission

There are still billions of people on this planet who have never experienced the love of Jesus. They don’t know Him like you and I do. Sadder still is the fact there are hundreds of millions who have never heard the gospel even once. Worst of all, these are all people who are destined for an eternity separated from God’s love, mercy, and presence.

The Grace of God

September 9, 2019 by Tim Sherfy

The grace of God is a curious thing. We don’t understand it, but we know we need it. We can’t comprehend it, but we want more of it. I don’t know how to adequately explain something I can neither understand or comprehend. I just know I’d be dead without it. The grace of God overwhelms me every day. Who am I that God should take notice of me?

grace of God,love,mercy,grace

I know who I am; I know what I’ve done. I know my thoughts and what I am capable of doing. There is no way I deserve the grace of God. Yet He gives it freely to me. He loves me despite who I am. Who does that?
