Happiness or Holiness?

July 5, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

what has your attention, living for God,Christ follower

I am often dismayed by preachers who teach that God wants you to be happy. This places the emphasis on us rather than on God. Life is not about you or me; it is only about our awesome creator God. He does not call us to happiness, but rather to holiness.  It is through holiness that love is perfected. Perfected love brings uncontainable joy into our lives. This joy is the result of communion with our Father, nothing more and nothing less. It is not happiness we should be seeking. Instead we must long for the joy that comes from living in authentic relationship with our Savior and Lord.

Overwhelming Love

June 28, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Geoff Moore has long been one of my favorite songwriters, and his most recent CD carries on his tradition of writing heartfelt songs about his walk with God. One of the tracks on the disc is called, “Overwhelming Love”, and it just floors me every time I listen to it. The heart of the chorus says, “Let us be ruined by Your overwhelming love”. For those of us aspiring to live lives wholly dedicated to Christ, this is the cry of our hearts. What would our lives look like if we were truly ruined by the love of God?

Keep it Precious

June 18, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

seize the day,seize the moment,seize the opportunity,carpe diem,living for christ,living for Jesus

Every moment of our lives we are faced with a plethora of decisions. With so many choices our response is often to do nothing at all. The speed in which life moves today can be overwhelming and even paralyzing. When faced with too many options we many times choose to react to whatever result our indecision brings. This leads to a stressful and unfulfilled life, one that is a far cry from the one Jesus created us to live. We are here for a purpose, and there is a limited amount of time we all have to accomplish that mission. I want to look at three ways we can overcome the overwhelming decisions we all face on a daily basis.

Simple

June 11, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

simplicity,Jesus first,reflection,meditation

I’m an extremely driven person with enough dreams and aspirations to span a couple of lifetimes. One of the biggest challenges in dealing with my personality is remembering to focus on the most important things in life. In my case, that means taking time to concentrate on Jesus and make the adjustments necessary in my life to be a consistent follower of His. There is a tendency in our Western culture to be very busy; nobody really cares what you are busy doing, just as long as you are busy. We’ve lost the simplicity of previous generations, and we may be losing our souls in the process.

Live Simply; Give Generously.

June 7, 2012 by Tim Sherfy

Two simple statements that should mark the lives of every follower of Christ are “live simply” and “give generously”.  In the Western world where we find ourselves the wealthiest people in history, it can be difficult to remember the way in which we have been called to live. One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Proverbs 30:7-9 which says “Give me neither poverty nor wealth; feed me with the food I need. Otherwise, I might have too much and deny You, saying, “Who is the Lord?” or I might have nothing and steal, profaning the name of my God.” What an amazing way to live – relying on God for daily provision, finding no pride or identity in our possessions, but rather simply trusting in God to provide.
