Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

A Disciple’s Life

March 21, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

Have you ever noticed when Jesus sent His disciples into the world, He didn’t send them out to receive earthly pleasures or joy, but rather to persecution and tribulation? He didn’t send them out to receive honor, but rather the contempt of the people. Jesus did not send them into a life of ease and rest, but rather to one of hard and difficult labor.

What was appealing to Christ’s early followers was not the life they would be leading but rather the fruit which would be the reward of their work. They were not focused on what they might gain or obtain, but only on what would be achieved for God’s glory and His Kingdom. This is what it looks like to be a disciple. It was true then, and it is true today.

Living the Life You Were Created to Live

March 7, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

It is my strong belief each of us have been created with a unique blend of passions, talents, and skills to accomplish the work God intended for us (Ephesians 2:10). I am also convinced God’s will for your life is to obey the things He told you to do, to put the needs of other’s first, and to reflect the matchless character of God in everything you do.

A life devoted to Christ will, at its core, be a life that looks like His. Grasping these principles will be amazingly freeing for you. Even for those who get this, some stumble on how to practically live it out in their day to day lives. I’d like to try and answer that question.

Reverse the Curse

February 18, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

When did we start believing the idea was to live in as much comfort and enjoying as much pleasure as we possibly can until our time comes to die? It’s nowhere in the Bible. In fact in the very first pages we see that sort of Utopian existence destroyed and our planet cursed with the sin which had been invited in. In the beginning, it was all about God. Nothing has changed.

It is still all about God. Except somehow, somewhere along the way, we began to think it’s all about us. We were created to worship God, but what most of us ever worship is ourselves. We put it in much more congenial terms like, “God wants me to be happy”, or the pathetic, “I deserve this”. It’s as if we think we can reverse the curse and live in our own self-created paradise.

An Inconvenient Life

January 25, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

If you want to be a follower of Jesus, you must accept you will live an inconvenient life. It isn’t you might have to live an inconvenient life, it is a certainty you will. We all have particular rhythms and structures built into our lives and we don’t want to see them disturbed. I have observed many believers who live lives of little consequence because they never move outside their comfort zone. Comfort is the rallying cry of this generation of believers and it should make every disciple of Jesus sick to their core.

This is the era of the lukewarm, the ones Jesus proclaimed he would vomit out of His mouth (Revelation 3:16). Following Jesus is never convenient. If you want to stay in your comfortable life with its familiar trappings and surroundings, I submit Jesus is not for you.

The Glory of Christmas

December 24, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

What does Christmas mean to you? To some its presents, time off from school, or crazy shopping expeditions. To others it is a time of loving, giving, and forgiving; a time of demonstrating peace and goodwill to all. To be certain, Christmas has become a commercialized extravaganza spanning cultures and to the religious and non-religious.

In this season when the world pauses to celebrate, how do we live in such a way as to point them to the one whose name we have placed at the very beginning of the word Christmas? What does Christmas mean to you? More specifically, what should Christmas mean to a disciple of Jesus Christ?
