Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

You Don’t Need a Title to Make Disciples

June 23, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

Mark Sanborn wrote a great little book a couple of years ago called, “You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader”. The premise of the book was that people at any level or profession can choose to be a leader in their own set of circumstances. Your name plate didn’t need a title to enable you to be a leader right where you were.

I believe the same principle can be applied to our walk with Christ. You don’t need a title to make disciples. Too many times we leave it up to the pastors and elders of our churches to do the spiritual heavy lifting, when the truth is Christ has empowered all of us to do the work of His kingdom. The Unqualified Commands of Jesus

June 21, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

I read a recent quote from Greg Boyd in which he referenced the unqualified commands of Jesus. When you read the passage in Luke 6:27-35 you find Jesus commanding us to love, serve, bless and do good to our enemies. All of these commands were given without condition. We have become brilliant at rationalizing why we shouldn’t do something for God, but Jesus left us no wiggle room.

Following Without Qualifications

He said to love, serve, bless and do good to our enemies – period. There is no excuse for ignoring the commands of Christ. If we would be a true and devoted follower of Him, we have no option other than to do what He instructed us. [Read more…] about The Unqualified Commands of Jesus

Making Your Life Count

June 19, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

I heard an interview with worship leader Laura Story yesterday. In it she made the statement that her biggest fear when she was younger was that the gospel would cost her her life. Now, she said, her biggest fear is that the gospel won’t cost her her life.

Make Your Life Count

She went on to explain that she didn’t want to get to the end of her life only to realize she hadn’t invested her time and resources fully to God. The basic message was that she wants to make certain that this life counts. It’s an aspiration we should all seek to attain. [Read more…] about Making Your Life Count

Role Reversal

June 16, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

When the faces of hungry children live half a planet away, it is easy to forget them. When our schedules are tight and we are running late, it is a simple matter to look the other way when we see a homeless person with an outstretched hand. Rationalizations for not lending a hand to help are easy to come by when our lives are already stressed out and booked solid.

Homeless Person Sleeping on a Bench

In theory, we know we should be helping those who are in need, the people who are less fortunate than ourselves. In practice, most of us struggle to carry on the mission of Christ. We are too wrapped up in our own problems and absorbed in our own lives. But let me ask a simple question: what if the person in need was you? [Read more…] about Role Reversal

The Curse of Prosperity

June 14, 2011 by Tim Sherfy

I watched a video of Haiti this morning and was struck by the looks of desperation in the eyes of the people. I saw very young children in alleyways looking lost and mothers sitting in makeshift clinics, their faces stoic and without hope. The earthquakes of 2010 exacerbated the problems in an already failing infrastructure.

Prosperity

These are our brothers and sisters in Christ; they should be full of joy, but the ravages of life in a sinful and broken world have relegated them to a life of despondency. [Read more…] about The Curse of Prosperity
