Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Awaken and Rise

July 23, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

How do we as followers of Jesus show up in a world that seems to have lost its collective mind? I avoid the news as much as I can because for at least the past forty years it has been driven by advertising dollars, political agendas, and sensationalism. It’s all but impossible to discern truth in what is being reported. There is so much noise and distortion it will deceive and distract you. You don’t have to avoid the news and social media as I do, but I will say you watch and listen at your peril.

As Kingdom people, we mustn’t get caught up in the salacious stories and agendas of the media and politicians. Everyone has a bias and an underlying motive. Ours should always be a bias towards loving every man, woman, and child, with the underlying motive of sharing the incredible news of the gospel with them.

Leave Nothing Undone

July 20, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Elisabeth Elliot wrote, “If we really have too much to do, there are some items on the agenda that God did not put there.” That is both true and convicting. We have enough time to do in this life what God has given us to do in it. If we focus our lives on Jesus, we will leave nothing undone. Nothing can thwart His sovereign will, and the work He has given us to do will get done.

Yet, how often are we harried and hurried, racing to fit one more thing into our schedule only to lament later that we will never have enough time to get it all done? As Mrs. Eliot suggested, perhaps we need to examine what it is we are busy doing. There is both rest and peace in the will of Jesus, not franticness and stress.

Today Matters

July 16, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Recently, I came across a quote from David Jeremiah: “Those who think the most about Heaven do the greatest work on earth.” It made me stop and wonder how much of my time I’m spending thinking about Heaven and how much I’m spending thinking about my life here and now. I doubt I’m alone in admitting most of my thoughts are on the present, not on my eternity. Everything we do here is laying the groundwork for life when Christ returns.

If we do nothing for Him, we should not expect much from Him. And if we do nothing for Him, we may find ourselves on the outside looking in when He establishes His Kingdom here on earth (Matthew 7:21-23). Today matters more than we can imagine, and the only way worth spending it is with a focus on the life to come, not on the one we are living.

His Yoke is Easy

July 13, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

There’s a disconnect between Jesus telling us His “yoke is easy, and His burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30) and the reality that many Christians live each day. For those who live in countries where they are not free to be Christ-followers, how is their burden light? For those who are denied provisions and healthcare because of their profession of Jesus, how is it that His yoke is easy?

Many in the West may have a bit of trouble relating to this. For them, life is easy. They are pursuing some variant of the American dream while claiming to follow Jesus. It would seem they have it all. I submit that those who think this way are looking at life through an American-centric lens and may not be yoked to Christ at all.

The Road Ahead

July 9, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

The road ahead is not always clear. Obstacles, expected and unexpected, will block our way and cause us to question the path we’ve chosen. Sometimes the road ahead is well lit, and we move forward with confidence. More often, it is so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. We’re lost, confused, and, if we’re honest, scared out of our minds. We do not understand what lies ahead.

One of the beautiful results of following Jesus is we may not always know where we’re going, but we always know with whom we’re going. The road ahead does not seem so unnerving knowing Jesus is at once leading the way, watching our back, and walking right beside us.
