Even If i Walk Alone

Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Sending People to Hell

August 6, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Someone went to Hell today while you played video games. Someone didn’t get the opportunity to learn about Jesus because you were busy watching television. We say we’re committed to Jesus but live mostly for ourselves.  For too many Christians, the only thing to which they are committed is their own safety, security, comfort, and living like everyone else in their culture.

We fail to live for Jesus because we’re too busy keeping up with the Jones’s. Our apathy is literally sending people to Hell. It’s not their fault, it’s ours. We don’t tell them, we don’t reflect Jesus with our lives, and when it comes down to it we find too many things more important than living like a disciple of Jesus.

What Does it mean to be a Disciple?

August 3, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

There is a great movement among evangelical circles today around creating disciples. The catch phrase seems to be we should be “disciples who make disciples who make disciples.” Certainly there is nothing wrong with this teaching, and it has been pushed forward by many for whom I have a great deal of respect. With all the fervor surrounding the movement, I have wondered if this was simply a new cover on the age-old evangelical strategy of getting as many people as possible to convert to Jesus.

I have a great aversion to the “I said the prayer so I’m good” model of Christianity, and in fact have the terrifying suspicion many who thought “they were good” will be anything but that when they die. Given this, I thought it necessary to take a deep dive into the answer to the question, “What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?”

How to Be Effective for God

July 30, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

The task of doing what Jesus called us to do can be daunting. We don’t feel qualified, prepared, or in any way adequate. All this proves is we are thinking too much of our own abilities and too little of God’s power. Francois Fenelon once wrote, “In doing what God wills there is very little to be done by us. And yet, there is a wonderful work to be accomplished;

it is nothing less than that of keeping nothing back, making no resistance, even for a moment, to the jealous Love that searches inexorably into the most secret recesses of the soul for the smallest trace of self, for the slightest intimations of an affection of which Divine Love is not the Author.” In other words, our main task is simply to surrender everything to Jesus and He’ll take care of the rest.

The Point of it All

July 27, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

The point of it all, everything we do in life, is to glorify God. The word glorify is a word we don’t use a lot in everyday speech, but essentially it means we reflect the love and character of God in our thoughts, words, and actions. Everything we think should reflect the love and character of God. Everything we say should be full of love and truth. Our every action should demonstrate the love and trustworthiness of God.

Nothing else matters. All of the goals and dreams we had had for ourselves died when we committed our lives to Jesus. His dreams become our dreams. His goals become the things for which we work.

Loving Others

July 23, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I was listening to a sermon by a pastor recently and heard him say, “I have no use for your religion when you claim to love a God you can’t see but hate your brothers and sisters who you can see.” It’s why religion disgusted Jesus as well. Religion of any flavor inevitably devolves into saying one thing with our lips but ignoring those same platitudes in our own lives.

Religion defines a set of rules no one can ever keep. We will never be able to effectively share the truth with others as long as we insist they adhere to a set of rules Jesus never laid down.
