Final Destination

May 1, 2025 by Tim Sherfy

Life presents no shortage of challenges. Physical injuries, mental health issues, and emotional distress can make the best of us wonder why we even bother to get up some days. The circumstances of life leave no doubt we live in a fallen world. For those of us who profess Jesus as Lord, there is a meaning to this madness.

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and a purpose for our pain. It borders on the cliché to say, but this world is not our home (Hebrews 13:14). We are here for only a little while, and then we will at last find rest in our final destination. If we can hold on to that truth, we will see this life is more than worth the struggle.

Whole World

November 7, 2022 by Tim Sherfy

Life is a little crazy these days. Hatred and division are everywhere you look. It’s easy to lose a little hope, and perspective is hard to keep. Trusted voices have turned out to be frauds and storied industries and franchises are falling by the wayside. The church is seeing the results of too many years of allowing the foxes to roam the henhouse. How can we stop the madness and get things back to some state of normalcy?

In times like these, we must remember God is still in control. That’s not some cliché statement left over from an old Sunday School lesson. Psalm 24:1-2 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.” He has the whole world in His hands.

Doubt

October 12, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Never let the devil convince you that you are less than who God says you are. You are created in the image of God, designed to be holy and in perfect union with your Father in Heaven (John 17:21). Never doubt that fact. In the beginning, God created men and women in His image (Genesis 1:27). Yet we constantly see ourselves as lacking what we need to succeed or enjoy life.

Satan plants thoughts in our minds like we aren’t attractive enough, smart enough, skinny enough, talented enough, wealthy enough, and on it goes. Before believing any of those lies, recognize that as an image-bearer of God, you are more than enough. You have all the talent and resources needed to become the person God created you to be.

One of Those Days

September 4, 2017 by Tim Sherfy

We’ve all had one of those days. One of those days when nothing seems to go right. The car breaks down. The babysitter bails. You spill coffee down your shirt before a big presentation. Or maybe it’s one of those days that negatively impact your life forever. A parent dies, or a spouse walks out. You lose your life savings in an investment that was never supposed to fail.

I’m not sure why, but often these disastrous and tragic events seem to occur in groups. In these times, your faith will be tested. When you have one of those days, how will your perception of God change?

Dealing with Despair

There’s a part of me that wants to believe that followers of Jesus should never have to deal with feelings of depression or despair. After all, the Creator of the Universe gave up His only Son just so we could live. He promises to heal our afflictions and rejoices in the fact that we will spend eternity with Him. He is the giver of all good things and loves us without limits or conditions. How could we ever get down on life? Having accepted Christ, we understand that the good news isn’t just good, it’s great! The reality is that we live in a broken world and generations of sin and abuse have left our minds in less than perfect working order. Add to this the fact that Satan delights in attacking us every waking moment of our lives and the unfortunate result is that we are sometimes overcome with despair.
