Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

Think of Jesus

August 10, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

It’s sad, but it seems far too easy to forget what Jesus did for us. He was a man unlike any other. Yes, we can explain this by the fact Jesus was at once fully God and fully man. How could He help but be extraordinary? It’s important to recognize that in His humanness, Jesus experienced the free will to choose His path. He didn’t have to be obedient, but He chose to on our behalf. Before Christ went to the cross, He asked the Father to provide another option (Matthew 26:36-39).

He didn’t want to go to the cross, but He went so we might live. Jesus could have saved Himself, but He did not. Imagine the horror among all those who were torturing Him if Jesus would have suddenly called 10,000 angels to assist Him. He could have done that, but He didn’t. He kept His love for God and His love for every human soul at the forefront. Jesus could have saved Himself but opted instead to save you and me.

Leave Nothing Undone

July 20, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Elisabeth Elliot wrote, “If we really have too much to do, there are some items on the agenda that God did not put there.” That is both true and convicting. We have enough time to do in this life what God has given us to do in it. If we focus our lives on Jesus, we will leave nothing undone. Nothing can thwart His sovereign will, and the work He has given us to do will get done.

Yet, how often are we harried and hurried, racing to fit one more thing into our schedule only to lament later that we will never have enough time to get it all done? As Mrs. Eliot suggested, perhaps we need to examine what it is we are busy doing. There is both rest and peace in the will of Jesus, not franticness and stress.

The Last Day of Your Life

May 14, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

What if today was the last day of your life? Would you be ready to die? Have you done all you wanted to do for God’s Kingdom? How would those closest to you remember how you lived concerning Jesus? All of us will face the last day of our life at some point. No one escapes a trip to the grave. Knowing this, we must live each day with an effort to finish well.

Perhaps today will be our last; perhaps it won’t. None of us know when our lives will end. We cannot live as if that day will not come because we know it will. It is only the arrogant who pretend they are immortal, and only the faithful who truly will be.

Of Roses and Thorns

March 30, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

In life, we can complain about the thorns among the roses, or we can marvel at the beauty of the roses among the thorns. It seems easier to complain about all that is wrong rather than discover the good amidst all the evil. The world God created is full of exquisite loveliness. On the flip side, the enemy has come and sown “tares among the wheat” (Matthew 13:24-30), ashes among the beauty.  It is up to each of us where we will focus our lives, either on the thorns or on the roses.

I hope as a follower of Christ, the choice is easy. Nothing or no one is more beautiful than our Savior. When we see the world through His eyes, we will see the beauty of His creation through a lens of love. But followers of Jesus are not perfect. We lose our focus and see things the way the rest of the world sees them. We give in to the temptation to become so wary of the thorns we never see the roses.

Running Out of Time

March 2, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Life is shorter than we think. Few of us ever think of tomorrow as being our last day on earth, much less of our next breath as being our last. No matter who we are, how well we take care of ourselves, or how much security we place around us, the end will always come sooner than we expect. When our time comes, there will be the inevitable regrets of things undone, words left unsaid, and opportunities never seized.

There are not enough years in our lifespan to do all we desire to do. Instead of viewing these facts through a morbid or depressing lens, we should instead use this knowledge to understand the urgency of our lives and prioritize our activities in a manner that reflects that urgency.
