Proactive Prayers

April 18, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

How often do we hear about the needs of another and say that we will pray for them? It’s a common occurrence in the life of every Christian. We know the best thing we can do for someone struggling is to pray. When friends are going through a rough period, we might pray for weeks to intercede on their behalf. It’s one of the beautiful things about the body of Christ. We love to pray for each other.

Did you ever stop and consider how most of our prayers are reactive rather than proactive? How often do we pray for the spiritual vitality of our fellow believers? How often do we pray for their strength to endure persecution and trials before they occur? I am convinced we need to be praying proactive prayers for ourselves and others. I’m also convinced we don’t do it enough.

What’s Wrong With the Church?

March 21, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Looking around at our culture, it’s easy to ask, “What’s wrong with this world?” As we observe all the evil and immorality surrounding us, perhaps a better question is, “What’s wrong with the church?” How did we get from “One Nation under God” to a fractured nation where everyone does what seems right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25; Proverbs 21:2; Romans 8:5)?

While we are eager to lay the blame at the feet of Satan, those of us who have fallen for his deceptions bear equal blame. We are the ones who let the devil into the church. We are the ones who thought a little compromise would work a great eternal glory. The world is crumbling because the church is crumbling. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do (Psalm 11:2)?

Last Days

March 18, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

Are we living in the last days? Judging by the number of videos and articles I see online, you’d have to conclude we must be. Certainly, the days are evil, darker, and more violent than most of us have ever seen in our lifetime. From a Biblical prophecy standpoint, there is nothing else foretold that is yet to be fulfilled. Indeed, much of what is happening in the geopolitical landscape seems to be aligning itself with prophecy.

But generations before ours have thought the same thing. Even the apostles thought Jesus would return during their lifetime (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). Whether or not we are living in the last days, our mission remains the same. We are to be using the gifts God has given us to reach others with the Gospel of Christ.

Don’t Be Caught Off Guard

March 11, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

How did you spend your last day off? Or, given the endless responsibilities in our busy world, perhaps a better question might be, “What would a perfect day look like to you?” Playing video games? Watching movies? Sleeping? Eating everything in the refrigerator? How many of us look forward to filling any free time with studying God’s Word?

Is it any wonder we are always caught off guard when we have an opportunity to share the Gospel? Paul urged the followers of Jesus to be ready to defend the Gospel at any time (2 Timothy 4:1-2). We’ll never be ready as long as we keep our brains engaged with the things of this world instead of what God has written in His Word.

Turn Off the Noise

January 29, 2024 by Tim Sherfy

To live lives wholly devoted to Christ, we have to turn off the noise. The noise is everything that keeps us from focusing on Jesus. The news, entertainment, jobs, relationships, and above everything else, our cell phones—it’s all noise. Over the last twenty years, we’ve gone from a world where only a few kept a smartphone in their pockets to a world where everyone has a smartphone in their pockets.

Every day we all observe people who can’t seem to look away from their phones. Too often, we are those people. If we can’t turn off the noise in our lives, we won’t be able to sense the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
