Everyone wants to make a difference. We all want to live a life of significance, to live a powerful life. Why then do so many lead lives of quiet desperation? Should Christ followers even aspire to any form of greatness or recognition? Nelson Mandela said there is no passion in playing small, in living a life less than you are capable of living.

I think Jesus would agree. He created you with a unique blend of skills and passions to do the work He designed for you to do. He created you for a reason. If Jesus is your Lord, the very Spirit of God resides within you. How then could you not live a powerful life?

Know Your Purpose

With just a little searching on the web, it doesn’t take long to notice one of the most common questions Christians are asking is, “What does God want me to do with my life?” We’ve covered this topic several times before, but still the questions around this continue to pile up. As a follower of Christ, you should absolutely know your purpose in life.

Jesus came to be a refuge for those flailing in the storms of life. He came to rescue the blind ones walking in the darkness of the world. It is our charge to continue His mission. We are to go into the world and be a refuge and a light for those in darkness and despair. That is your purpose and mine. Jesus is the light of the world, and we are His ambassadors.

Distractions

If you ever have a conversation with me, it won’t take long to realize I’m ready to start eternity with Jesus right now. I was ready last year. In fact, I think I’ve been ready for a few decades now. This world holds no allure for me. Before you get the wrong impression of me being someone who has it all together and never struggles with selfishness or pride, let me assure you nothing would be further from the truth.

I more want to make the point even someone like myself – who has no use for the things of this world – is no less prone to its distractions. I really hate that about myself. Perhaps you can relate.

Live Humbly

In his classic work, “The Imitation of Christ”, Thomas à Kempis wrote: “Strive to do another’s will rather than your own. Always choose to have less rather than more. Always seek the lowest place and be subject to everyone else. Wish and pray at all times God’s will be fulfilled in you. If we will do this, we will enter into the inheritance of peace and rest.”

These words, written nearly six hundred years ago still hold great wisdom for us today. If we would live our lives in such a way, we would slough off much stress and anxiety. I believe most of the stress, regret, and worry we feel is due to our focus being on ourselves rather than on God and others.

Living the Life You Were Created to Live

It is my strong belief each of us have been created with a unique blend of passions, talents, and skills to accomplish the work God intended for us (Ephesians 2:10). I am also convinced God’s will for your life is to obey the things He told you to do, to put the needs of other’s first, and to reflect the matchless character of God in everything you do.

A life devoted to Christ will, at its core, be a life that looks like His. Grasping these principles will be amazingly freeing for you. Even for those who get this, some stumble on how to practically live it out in their day to day lives. I’d like to try and answer that question.
