The Parable of the Wedding Feast

June 21, 2021 by Tim Sherfy

I’ve read the parable of the wedding feast more times than I can remember. When we become so familiar with a passage, it’s easy to lose its significance. We must always guard against a casual reading of the Bible. Every word has the power to impact our lives. After all, it is the very Word of God. We should always read with reverence and awe. When we do, God reveals fresh insight and application of His story.

This happened in my recent reading of the parable of the wedding feast. I’d always perceived those who refused to come to the feast as the Pharisees and the nation of Israel. All those who claimed to love God but refused to see Him in their midst. As is too often the case, I identify who Jesus was talking to while conveniently leaving myself out of that audience.

Thinking Eternally

December 7, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

As people, we obsess over numbers. We count dollars to quantify net worth, attendees to measure churches, and followers to determine popularity on social media. But did you ever stop to think that numbers are a product of humanity, not of eternity? Counting is irrelevant to God because numbering anything in eternity would be futile.

How many years will we spend in Heaven with God? That’s an unanswerable question because years have no meaning when one is thinking eternally. My point is the very measure we use on earth has no meaning when we are thinking eternally. And that is how we should spend our days, focused on what is coming rather than what we have right now.

Do Good People Go to Heaven?

February 6, 2020 by Tim Sherfy

Aaron Rodgers, the star quarterback of the Green Bay Packers made waves when he proclaimed, “I don’t know how you can believe in a God who wants to condemn most of the planet to a fiery hell. What type of loving, sensitive, omnipresent, omnipotent being wants to condemn his beautiful creation to a fiery hell at the end of all this?” Mr. Rodgers is misinformed about the God in whom he does not believe.

do good people go to heaven, eternity, salvation, surrender,John 3:17,condemn the world,Romans 3:23,all have sinned,2 Peter 3:9, willing none to perish,John 3:18,rejecting Jesus

Jesus was clear saying He did not come to condemn the world, but to deliver it from the forces of evil (John 3:17-18). We are saved from the condemnation Mr. Rodgers talks about by bowing down to Jesus as Lord and surrendering our lives to Him. Those who reject Jesus condemn themselves, it is not the will of God (John 3:18; 2 Peter 3:9).

Hell is Real

September 1, 2016 by Tim Sherfy

I am a firm believer the key to leading people to Jesus is through building relationships with them so we might be able to demonstrate God’s love and character to them. At the same time, we must never lose the urgency caused by the reality of Hell.

Despite the modern propensity to focus only on the more pleasant parts of Christ’s teaching – namely Heaven –we do a great disservice to the world if we don’t at least occasionally remind them Hell is real. It’s not popular, but it is necessary to talk about this. Otherwise we risk delivering only half the story and distorting the Gospel of Jesus.

Heaven on Earth

April 20, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

“Jesus didn’t come just to die for your sins. He came to teach you how live a full, earthy, gritty, and marvelous life.” Hugh Halter wrote that in his powerful book, “Flesh: Learning to Be Human Like Jesus”.  Later in the book, Mr. Halter asks the poignant question, “If someone were to ask you, ‘What is the gospel?’ what would you say? How much of your answer would reflect the afterlife, and how much would reflect this life?”

We Christians have arguably become well accomplished at selling the benefits of Heaven. We can describe the horrors of Hell and then the wonders of Heaven, which should make following Jesus a no-brainer for anyone, right? The problem is that this type of evangelism has little precedent in the teachings of Jesus Himself.
