What Does It Mean To Be In Relationship With God?

April 9, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

There are a lot of phrases that Christians tend to throw around that sound great but often leave you scratching your head as to what it really means. If you’ve attended a church or read a few books on Christianity, you no doubt have heard that we should be in relationship with God. It sounds like a no-brainer. Of course we should, and who wouldn’t want that anyway?

The very thought of being in relationship with God gives you a warm feeling inside; you know that it is something that you want. But what does being in relationship with God really look like?

God is All We Need

April 6, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Francois Fenelon noted that, “God needs nothing that is in us. He can never find anything there except what He Himself has given us.” How often do we stop to ponder that? In the midst of chasing success, building relationships, and achieving new accomplishments, it becomes easy to become impressed with ourselves.

We are so impressed that we can’t wait to point out how amazing we are to others as well. But there is nothing that we ever achieve that God has not put in us. We are nothing on our own. It’s one thing to acknowledge this, but quite another to live as if it were really true.

What Does God Ask of You?

François Fenelon wrote, “What does God ask of you, but to be happy? Have you not realized that we are happy in loving him? Have you not felt there is no other real happiness, whatever excitement might be found in sensual pleasures, apart from Him? Since you know where to find the Fountain of Life, and have once drunk of it, why would you seek foul, earthly cisterns?” It’s a great question. Once we have experienced the incredible love and goodness of God, why would we ever then be satisfied with the pale pleasures of this world that cannot compare in any way to the majesty and unparalleled beauty of Jesus?

Jesus is the Good News

We often get in the way of the simplest message. Instead of just telling people about Jesus, we launch into complex explanations of why Jesus is the good news and what we must do in order to experience Him. In his book, “Flesh”, author Hugh Halter puts it in very understandable terms: “Jesus is the good news that most of us are starving for. It’s just that He has been hijacked by rules and structures and humans afraid of grace.” We’ve made it a difficult thing to understand that Jesus is the good news. His love, His grace, His desire to be with us is all we really need to understand.

Jesus at the Center

I love this thought from A.W. Tozer: “We should see God at the center, and everything else just at the edges.” Can you imagine being so consumed by God that anything that was not God appeared only in your peripheral vision, and slightly blurry at that? This is the goal of my life and for the life of every true disciple of Jesus. When Christ walked the earth, He did so with His focus firmly and always on the Father. He made it clear that the things He did were only because He saw the Father doing those same works (John 5:19). As people-centric as Jesus is and was, those same people still were only on the edges of His vision. He lived His life so consumed by God that nothing could compromise His mission.
