Instructing and encouraging you to live your life as a disciple of Jesus

How to Be Effective for God

July 30, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

The task of doing what Jesus called us to do can be daunting. We don’t feel qualified, prepared, or in any way adequate. All this proves is we are thinking too much of our own abilities and too little of God’s power. Francois Fenelon once wrote, “In doing what God wills there is very little to be done by us. And yet, there is a wonderful work to be accomplished;

it is nothing less than that of keeping nothing back, making no resistance, even for a moment, to the jealous Love that searches inexorably into the most secret recesses of the soul for the smallest trace of self, for the slightest intimations of an affection of which Divine Love is not the Author.” In other words, our main task is simply to surrender everything to Jesus and He’ll take care of the rest.

Loving Others

July 23, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I was listening to a sermon by a pastor recently and heard him say, “I have no use for your religion when you claim to love a God you can’t see but hate your brothers and sisters who you can see.” It’s why religion disgusted Jesus as well. Religion of any flavor inevitably devolves into saying one thing with our lips but ignoring those same platitudes in our own lives.

Religion defines a set of rules no one can ever keep. We will never be able to effectively share the truth with others as long as we insist they adhere to a set of rules Jesus never laid down.

Losing Your Marbles

July 6, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

I recently heard a story about a man who worried he was wasting his life and not spending enough time with his family. He calculated he had about a thousand Saturday’s left in his life span, so he bought a thousand marbles and put them in a jar. Each Saturday morning he would take a marble out and throw it away.

This served to help him visualize how finite time is and how it was ever dwindling. The story resonated with me as I am always looking for reminders to keep me focused on my purpose and mission in life. It’s too easy to let our days quickly pass without focusing on Jesus and building His Kingdom.

Jesus and Nothing Else

July 2, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Let me take you back to the moment you gave your life to Christ. You surrendered everything to Him and pledged to spend the rest of your days serving Him. How much time passed before you were right back into your old rhythms and activity? If following Jesus is our true intention then we have to put an end to our pursuit of everything other than Him. Nothing else matters. It is Jesus and nothing else or no Jesus at all.

That’s the truth, but we waste so much time and energy trying to put an “and” between Jesus and our own desires and dreams. The problem with this is if we are true followers of Jesus, our own desires will be the same as the desires of God.

Christianity is…

June 8, 2015 by Tim Sherfy

Christianity is misunderstood and misrepresented. Instead of a movement of people that act and look like Jesus, the word has been co-opted to identify people of a particular political bent who live a particular lifestyle. Christianity is not about people who claim they believe in God.  The Bible says even demons believe in God (James 2:19), and no one would ever call a demon by the name “Christian”!

Christianity is not a list of do’s and don’ts; it is not about saying a certain prayer or attending a certain church on Sunday. Christianity is all about believing in, and replicating, the character of God. Christianity is first, foremost, and always about love.
